I have a 1990 ford F 150 w/ a 5 speed M5od tranny thats been having a few problems with what i figured was the clutch, it was making a bad grinding noise and just before i was able to limp it home i heard a loud "pop" after that, the speedo acted like a tac reving up to 100 kms when really the truck was actually doing about 30 and slowing. Now i had the clutch replaced and it still wont move. i can put the truck in 1st gear and actually get out and look under, when i do this the driveshaft spins really slowly but the rear diff doesnt move...any ideas?? this is my baby we're dealing with here!! any help would be greatly appreciated
As Festus Hagen mentioned, if the driveshaft turns and the rear wheels do not, then something broke.
With the transmission in neutral put the rear axle on jackstands so that both rear wheels are off the ground. Turn one tire by hand and see if the opposite tire turns. If it turns, both axle shafts are probably OK.
Next turn the driveshaft by hand and look closely at where the pinion shaft enters the front of the differential housing to make sure that it turns with the driveshaft.
While you turn the driveshaft one or both of the rear wheels will turn. If you are able to turn the driveshaft without moving one or both rear wheels it will be necessary to open the differential and check things out inside.
This could easily be a broken axle shaft or pinion shaft. Need to do the troubleshooting to find out for sure.
