I tried posting this in the 4X4 section but wasn't getting any responses...
I have yet to install my 35" MT's on the Excursion but was wondering what issues I could possibly have with rubbing and how to fix it?
The new rubber is mounted on new 8" rims with better backspacing than stock, so I imagine the rub on the leafs will be eliminated. The truck will also have a very mild 2" levelling lift up front with and extra 1.5" increase in the back.
I was looking at the stock wheels on it now (265/75/16) and noticed they are awefully close to the back of the front fender when the wheel is turned. Is this going to be my problem area? How are the fenders "trimmed" to avoid this?
Thanx for your help... <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- sig -->
Trimming the fenders to not rub is simple, you find out where your rubbing and remove that part of the fender. The plastic is pretty easy to trim, I like using a variable speed drimel with rotozip bits and a flex shaft. It cuts like butter.
Because you changed the backspacing, it's also changed where the tire is likely to rub. I think less back space makes the corners of the tires travel further.
You only have to cut the metal if the tire is bigger than the opening and the axle is centered in it, I think the stock opening is around 42". With 35" tires, you should rub only on the inside, no metal contact.

I think some have also used a heat gun to heat up the inner plastic fender were they get rubbing and bend that area in to get the clearance.
It takes a lot of heat to make the plastic malleable. I hair dryer shouldn't cut it, but a professional heat gun should do. For doing lexan, I think it was 400 degrees for 10 minutes in the oven to make it moldable, it's probably the same for the plastic used near the manifolds or higher. Once you get is hot, a pair of tongs is supposed to make nice bowl shapes. Just push them in and spread them.
