The easiest way without guessing which could be a little pain in the butt.. Pull the upper and lower intakes off and look at the valley The engine size should be cast into the block..... It sucks but it's better than guessing... Other than that figuring out what types of pulley configurations the engines had.. That could be a pain.... Good luck..
The 370 and 429 HP engines were only put in heavy trucks. Not in an F-350 or E-350 van / RV chassis.
The HD engines have a cast iron front cover and center dump exhaust manifolds. They actually look very different from the truck and passenger car bbf's.
to tell a 370 from a 429 on the HD engines look at the casting number above the starter, a 429 will be D9TE-AB (same as a light truck 460) the 370 will be D9TE-BB. Scott already brought up the diff between the 460 and the HD motors being the timing cover as an easy give away.
as far as pulley config goes i know the previous owner messed that up cause there is no pully for the ac to hook up on.
I will be spending much time in the ford graveyards over the next few weeks
