I have a 90' F150 lariat ext. cab short box manual that i want to swap the 302 thats on its last legs for a 351w. I was wondering if i could take the flywheel and intake w/ fuel injection and put them on to a new longblock. Would the 302 computer system and injectors work?
Having done this I'll let you know that the bottom line is you really need a complete 5.8 EFI motor. Here are the details...
The 5.8 block is taller and wider than the 5.0, so the lower intake is also wider by about 3". And while the intake looks very similar on the outside the runners are shaped completely different so you can't put a 5.0 upper on a 5.8 lower.
The oil pump driveshaft is also larger and that makes the distributor body larger so the complete distributor is also different.
The 5.8 has 28oz balance while the 5.0 uses 50oz so different flywheels are needed.
Lastly the 5.8 uses larger crank bearings so the 5.0 oilpan won't fit.
The accessory brackets will transfer as will the timing cover and water pump, engine mounts, and all the sensors are in the same location. The firing order is different but that doesn't matter for your version of the EFI system, and the 302 computer will operate the 5.8 but you may or may not encounter some drivability issues, a 5.8 computer would eliminate these issues.
Milage is the big indicator, the lower the better obviously. The 5.8 was very common in the HD pickups and all fullsize vans from '88 until the end of '97, so it shouldn't be that hard to find.
I found and 89' F250 reg. cab 4x4 with 114,000 miles. would this be a good donor truck? could i take the engine, trans, and trans. case and use the original f150 axles to hook ita all up. The add for the truck says it would be a good farm truck and isn't in great condition. the price on it is only $500 though.
