Downshifting Hard

When my truck downshifts from OD - It shifts REALLY hard. It only does it from OD to Drive and upshifts fine. It even downshifts in lower gears fine, just from OD it does it. It used to do it occaisonally but now does it most of the time. I can let off the gas and manually downshift on the column and then hammer it and it doesn't do it. Changing fluid/filter didn't change anything.

Any suggestions?

Did you retorque the valve body bolts? These transmissions can have all kinds of weird problems because they work loose and suck air. rk

The tranny has never been touched except to change the fluid and filter.

Should they be re-torqued?

Yes and also check on bullitan # 971111, your Ford dealer should have it.

How hard is it to re-torque those valve body bolts? I don't have any experience with that. Also, what lbs. should they be torqued to?

Not too bad, remove pan and torque to 80-90- (inch lbs)there is a diagram of the torque pattern in the Ford manual but I don't have it here at this location. Just pretty much start out on the middle and work toward the front and rear like tightening a head gasket.
