Auto 4x4

Hey guys, just an off the wall question. I have an 02 Explorer 4x4 with a 4.0. I really don't like the automatic 4 wheel drive. Is there any way to disable this feature and still have the 4x4 high and low functional.
Thanks.

Not really a good way to. Is your Auto 4WD acting up?

NO the Auto 4x4 is working just fine thats the problem. I didn't know if maybe there was a way to re-program the computer or not. The auto 4x4 just hampers my driving style

I've heard of people with 2nd gen Explorers do what they call the "brown wire mod". If I understand it correctly, you cut the wire that controls the clutch in the transfer case and install a switch. As long as the circuit is open, the clutch doesn't engage (they say they can get 2Lo from this), and you disable it. You can then close the switch to get 4wd. I don't know specifics, nor do I know if it will apply to your 3rd gen, but it might be worth looking into.
