I really have racked my brain here on how to install an after market carb and non-egr performer manifold for my 1986 f150 351w ho. I am looking to invest perfomance in every aspect of my truck starting with this set-up. Don't want to mess up computer if it even would. The conversion has to be possible right. Always had older trucks without electronic crap. Easier to maintaine for me and better perfomance carberated wise without the millions of vacuum leak head aches and emissions malfuctions. Has any one out there accomplished this conversion with success. EFE, EGR, SMOG all gone down to the basics stuff. Please help. Can't even see why rebuilding engine for perfomance horses and torque if I am stuck with oem stuff. Please someone tell me I am not so limited like I think I am when I look under the hood. bought truck a month ago with so many plans. Already have edelbrock 2181 performer maniford and have my quadrajet for 4x4ing. Next week headers and true dual with h pipe and haven't decided on muffler yet. Then to the gearing. Already have lift with 35's. Need 2 or 3 more inches though. When engine goes it's getting rebuilt for performance. Thanks for the time
What's the problem? Put the manifold on, and install the carb, and you have it made. Just make sure to hook the PCV valve back up, and the vacuum manifold on the firewall. Also you need a spot for the brake booster hose.
hi, sorry but I thought it,d be more difficult then that due to the computer, and the efe valve stuff. And then theres the vapor stuff coming the the gas tank to the carb. Just plug it off and get pressure release fuel caps right? where is a good spot for the power brake line. hows my tranny even kickdown. Will this mess with that. no throttle position sensor to worry about messing with my timing. I heard that taking the efe stuff off it won't run right.
Do you have a computer on this engine? If you have a vacuum line going to the distributor, then probably not.
All these vacuum lines and stuff you are worried about will have no place to go, and I thought that was your objective, to get rid of them. Sounds like you already know about the fuel tank venting, and hopefully you will have a vacuum tree or fitting somewhere in the back that will accept the brake booster line.
The only thing you might have to worry about is the distributor. If it doesn't have a vacuum line or vacuum advance on it, then you should change that to a older style that does when you change the carb around.
If you are going to run the quadrajet, then you will have to rig your own kickdown linkage. If the kickdown is a mechanical arm, then you could just leave it and not use it. If the kickdown is a cable, and you have a overdrive tranny, then you will have to deal with that or the tranny is not going to work correctly.
The distributor is vacuum advance with a dura spark ignition. isn't there a map sensor or temp sensor on the intake. I don't see a kickdown anywhere on the carb. but it does kickdown. is it a wot sensor that controls this. it isn't a overdrive tranny as far as I know. 3 speeds is all i get. but the guy before me did his own thing as well. well I have to go to work but thanks for the replies. have the next 2 days off and finally have the time to do all this. thanks for the replies. I'll try and check back after work or tomorrow.
