Ok, in the past I always would have just yanked the 351m out and put either a small block or a big block in it. But I have decided that my M is going to stay in the truck. So I will need some help. I have a 400 Edelbrock Perfomer, a 625 Carter Competition Series Carb, Summit Headers and a Summit Cam set to match this set up. (still waiting for the cam to come in I had to order it). The bottom end was recently rebuilt so I "think" it has a new timing gear and chain but I am not sure. It is in a 79 F150 4x4. Question: when I install the cam, lifters, intake and carb (waiting to do it all at the same time) can I use the timing chain that is with it. I believe it is a stock chain and gear and was wondering about the timing advance (I know it is retarded from the factory and that is what I want to know can I with the current gear set make my cam work to the best effiency?) Please let me know. And any other helpful hints on this engine, I don't want a race truck, just better horse power and torque... and believe it or not driveability. I think that the way the M is retarded that they don't run with the efficiecy they should. As I was saying Speak OUT and let me know your thoughts.
Bob, There have been many posts regarding this very question in here over the last year or two. Also, if you look under "Tech Articles" for the 351/400 article, it explains it good. You will want to put a new double roller timing chain on your engine. Make sure that when you install it, you put it "straight up". Do not advance or retard by 4deg like most cams will allow. You will be very happy with the power your engine now has. I had the same setup as you are installing, and the power over stock was incredible!
