like i said, i hate it. I popped a new modulator valve on it (purple stripe, as per advance auto database) and it shifts much better, but i noticed it is going from first strait into third. So, the one shift it makes is pretty good. But now, when it gets warmed up, and you put it into drive, it will move as it should, but it pops out of gear. Alot! the torque converter usually makes a loud ticking sound, but when it comes out of gear, this sound stops. I have to drive ten feet, put it in park, wait a few minutes...drive fifteen feet, wait.... and do this for about fifteen minutes. the way i can tell it is going to move again is that the torque converter (i believe) will start making the ticking sound again. it wont even engage unless it is making this sound. WTF. i just got my tax return back, i am thinking about throwing a t19 in place of the c-s**t before i lose my mind.
Rupe, he has a C6 3 speed tranny. No computer, no limp mode.
Whatever is going on in there, it doesn't sound good. I hate to ask this, but what is your fluid level?
You would be better off replacing the transmission or even rebuilding it yourself. Parts are cheap for the C6.
i dont know if this would be your issue are not, but when was the last time the intermediate band was adjusted. when i rebuilt the trans in my 85 it had a bad band and it would cause all kind of problems.
Call a ford dealer, you might be able to get a rebuilt C6 motorcraft for around $750. I got one last year for this price with a 3year 100,000 warranty at any ford dealer.
Yea, I just changed the fluid and filter. I used a little lucas transmission aditive in it as well. Fluid level is within range. I talked to a shop and they said the only time they messed with the bands was the initial setup. I figured I won't spend a penny having this fixed, but rather put a manual in it. I hate automatics anyways. The PO told me this was a new transmission, but who knows. T19 is pretty stout, right? Would I need to worry about rebuilding it, or just pop it in and take a chance?
The T19 isn't "rebuildable" in the same way as an automatic. You only replace what needs replacing. If you wanted to replace all the wear items like bearings and synchros, you would easily pass the cost of a new C6 transmission. Teardown and inspection would probably be a good idea no matter what kind of used transmission you get (C6, T19 or 5 speed).
As you can see with your truck, you never really know what you are getting with something used.
the t19 is bomb proof! its very hard to hurt them a put mine through alot..i highly reccomend it ... have about 3 guys to help lift it in these things are real heavy its a struggle pickin em up by yourself (trust me lol)
Well hell, GA is just down the road... I have three places with t19s within fifty miles of me for 150 bucks. Also one for 750 thirty miles away that is "rebuilt". I think I may just go with one of these, and get everything else new as needed.
You said it when u said you never know what you're getting when its used. It took about two months of ownership before I realized all the stuff that was wrong with the truck. This is the only thing left to work out, however. I like how people speak of the t19, I would love overdrive, but would be scared to get a used zf5, and I have yet to hear anyone say "t19 is weak" or "has a lot of problems".
Ok well thank you guys for the input. Ill be driving home soon and it will hopefully take me less than fifteen minutes to start moving without stopping.
A T19 Master Rebuild Kit is about $200, Syncro kit is about $100 ....
You would have to replace many items to equal the price of a Quality Rebuilt C6.
-Enjoy
fh : )_~
Bit of an apples to orange comparison you show there. Rebuild kit VS complete rebuilt transmission. A C6 rebuild kit can be under $100.
However, as others have mentioned the T-19 is a stronger transmission with fewer things to go wrong and I suppose its a smaller gamble to get a used T-19 than a used C6.
Normally I would suggest considering a ZF5 speed, but I think that would just complicate things and drive the cost up so I guess a used T19 it is.
I have split a transfer case in half towing a little load behind my truck.
I have broken more than one driveshaft.
I have also twisted the yoke off the rear axle.
In 450,000 miles I have replaced a 3 dollar bushing in my T 19 once.
Years of towing, hauling and plowing snow, around 275,000 miles when I replaced the bushing.
Still shifts just like a new one only better.
If you break a T 19, you are doing something really wrong.
Yea! That's the kind of opinion that makes me wanna just drop a t19 in and not worry about tearing it down. I guess if I do the swap, and the tranny needs work, the auto to manual swap is the hard part so I could just pull it an go bananas on it. I'm gonna call the place tomorrow to see if I can come pick it up. Thanks for the input everyone.
