hey everyone, mostly wanted to say hey. just bought my first ford. its a 79 F150 with a 351 and its an auto. I have to say the whole car thing is a new animal to me, especially the ford world. i used to have a 95 toyota that i lifted, but thats a different animal altogether.
i'm a motorcycle mechanic, so theres nothin on this truck i couldnt do. it does need a few things though, which i would like some input from you all. it's gonna need a new exhaust. i'm gonna go ahead and do the full exhaust, but would like to know about a couple you all prefer for relatively cheap but decent quality. this weekend i'll be cleaning the carb on it and changing the oil and going over everything just to make sure.
i kinda bought this on an impulse somewhat, it wasn't in bad shape body wise, and it ran okay after i ran some gas through it, shifts well, haven't tested the 4wd.
any problems common on these? i love to read so i'm sure i'll find out, but just thought i'd introduce myself and say hi.
Welcome to FTE! I personally like true duals, with glasspacks, has more of an old school sound. I would also change the transmission fluid, who knows when the last time it was changed. Do you have any pics?
Welcome to FTE, we're really glad to have you here. The first thing I would check is if you have to have the truck pass emissions in your county; that will tell you if you need to keep the catalytic converters or not. I went with turbo mufflers when I did my exhaust last year; it's great and all but next time I'm going to go for something louder.
posted up a couple pics in an album. its red. i live in Florida in the USA. and specific brands, places to shop online or anything? thanks for the warm welcome.
Depends do you like a little quieter or louder or really loud? Me personally I like it loud. Like fmc said, check to see if you have to go through emissions. Thrush mufflers are pretty loud, and Cherry bombs are really loud. The Hooker maximum flows are kind of like a turbo muffler and they sound pretty good. A buddy of mine has a 65 f250 4x4 with a 352 in it, and it sound really good.
Flowmaster 40s have a good deep sound, not raspy like glass packs. I always order through Summit Racing or Jegs. Some of the site sponsors may carry full kits.
Guess the really only common problems are rust issues. If youre not rusty (floors, cab mounts, bed sides) then your lucky. Keep watch of your engine temp too. And I always keep an extra voltage regulater in the glove box just in case cuz I had some trouble with that once but they are cheaply priced. These really were very good trucks. Welcome
Welcome to FTE!! Lots of folks with lots of info on here. My 79 has true duals w/ glasspacks, its sounds ok. The 76 has headers only, real loud. The 73 has 3" single exhuast w/ a turbo muffler, it sounds really good. It really depends on what you are looking for. A buddy has 2" duals on his & its loud, but a little hi pitched for my taste. I like a deeper, throaty sound.
i want somethin a little deeper, actually pretty quiet to be honest. im not into the really loud and all that. It has flowtech headers on there right now, but the whole system is rusted and I figured i'd go ahead and replace it while i have the money since i didn't pay as much for this truck as i had saved.
anyone know of a full kit? or do you pretty much have to buy headers and piece the rest?
just to let you know i haven't worked on cars in over two years, and i'm used to working on motorcycles, so i dont really know how much stuff costs. anyone know how much a full service might cost? as in all new fluids and filters?
magnaflow has a dual in, dual out muffler that has a deep, throaty tone... they sound nice. i don't have one, i dual straights on mine. my neighbor has a ram w/the magnaflow. i dont know what sizes they go on, tho. i can imagine it's like 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", and maybe 3".
oh, and does anybody know where i can get mufflers to fit 2 3/8" pipe (made my exhaust out of an old swingset).
Series 50 flowmaster are deep throaty sounding but aren't all that loud. They sound pretty nice. I bought a 3" catback series 50 many years ago (15 or so). $250 then, not sure what they run these days. Put it on another truck I had at the time, (chebby, cough, cough). THe parts never rusted out or anything, were still on it when i sold it 2 yrs ago. Probably the best sounding of all the exhaust setups i've had, save the straight headers. They also come in a variety of set-ups: dual in-out, single in-dual out, etc...
