First off hello to all from new Guy. I have been doing allot of reading and looks like you all have a great site with good people.
I own a 1975 F150 Ranger with a 460, C6. We are second owners and have owned it since 1981. It is factory original with the exception of a Carter AFB. I am really proud of this truck and it is in mint condition. Came with A/C, steering wheel cruise control, dual oil filter, steering cooler, tranny cooler and over size radiator.
Her problem is, when I start it after sitting over night all is good. After the initial start, every time I go to turn it over it drags slow and hard to the point of almost draining the battery. This is an intermittant problem say 75% of the starts. This started in the mid 80's but only happened every once in a great while and not as severe as now. I have new battery, all cables, solenoid and starter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I ran the ground cable to the starter bolt and gave the battery a full charge but no help, it still cranks slow. It sometimes cranks so slow it will run the battery down and not start.
Is your battery holding a charge. Your last statement said that it would run the battery down. I've had batteries take a charge but when you put a load on it you don't get squat. What happens when you try and jump start it. Does it spin any faster?

Great advice; this is exactly what I'm getting at. 49ford8n - shut the truck off and measure the battery voltage the next time it's cranking slow.
I picked up a bigger battery with 1000CA that fit in the tray and I still have the problem but at a lesser extent. It still cranks slow but quick enough to start with out running down.
My manuals don't have a timing set point. I got 12BTDC from a shop in town. What is the correct timing for a 1975 460 Auto with no emmissions? Thanks

Why haven't you tried what I suggested? The problem obviously still exists. We can't be of much help if you don't follow our advice.
I think jermyjudge has an interesting suggestion. In my experience the engine will still start fine without the factory start-retard feature, but it would be a good thing to check after you check the battery voltage.
