Programmers

I have an 06 f150 4x4 ec with the 5.4 and I am looking for more power. I do not like the current throttle response and I think that when it does hook up I need more power. I was reading an article in Diesel Power that was bout what you could get the most power out of, gas or diesel. Obviously it was the diesel, but for the upgrades to the 5.4 in the f150, they used a Granatelli programmer. For their performance, their dyno showed that the Granatelli programmer gained 20 hp and 20lb-ft at the rear wheels. Link: Why buying a used diesel truck makes good sense. the price tag on it was only $325 as well. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about these programmers. I see a lot about the edge and I even saw one guy on hear report, with a picture of his monitor, saying he did a 0-60 in 6.59 seconds with the edge and nothing else done to his pickup. Your input and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from one ford guy to many others.

I don't know a lot about the Granatelli programmers for gas trucks, but I do know they weren't the greatest on diesels. Most of the folks on this site prefer Edge, Gryphon, or SCT programers. The Edge only comes with canned tunes. The Gryphon, which is an Edge with custom tunes or SCT can be customized to your particular truck. All run in the $400 range. And they all have excellent programs for the transmission as well.

Welcome to the site
I got the EDGE in '06, its Great
but I sent it to Power Hungray Performance, for the Gryphon upgrade no regrets!
do your Truck a favor get the Gryphon, it will give you the best performance for your Mods
PS steer clear of used programers, could present a hassel.

When you guys are talking about custom tunes, you mean something programmed for the bolt ons you've added? Like exhaust and CAI? The Gryphon would be programmed for these, while the Edge would be programmed for stock settings? Therefore you wouldnt get the most out of the bolt ons, or the programmer if you have mods and the Edge? Just wondering, as I'm new to programmers.

your on the right track
The EDGE has "canned tunes" works with any or no mods.
The Gryphon has "custom tunes" set up for your particular Truck & the mods you add.
EX. if you have a Gryphon, no CAI, and add the CAI later you will have to get a custom tune for the CAI
chech their web site

yes...custom tunes means someone sat down and did the tuning custom suited to your truck.

you provide them with some detailed info, and they'll write it for you. this lets you squeeze the motor/tranny for the best performance available

"canned" tunes are just that...a cookie cutter tune that is good for 99% of the trucks on the road...you get results, but there is lots of room for improvement

So in essence, it's best to get your exhaust, CAI..etc...then get the custom tunes for your set up?

Also, do these programmers put any "stress" on the motor/tranny?

Thanks!

How much extra is it to get the monitor for the edge so that different parameters could be watched? also, how much would a custom tune cost if I were to add a CAI later?

Is there a website that I can look at to see more information about it or to see how much the Gryphon upgrades would cost?

I have heard that it costs 50 bucks to have a custom tune added for a new mod. on the truck. The actual Gryphon programmer is the same price as the Edge Evolution...I think.

I googled gryphon programmers and came up with the power hungry website, which had a list of FAQ's that helped me out. Maybe it will answer some of your questions too?
