Wow lots of cents... Yeah, the PO had a cd player in there before and hacked the speaker connector(it's in the dash somewhere, I just dunno where. The 4-prong connector he cut and wired the hot to the radio. A friend of mine saw I was in need of a factory casette deck so he went and bought one off ebay for me and it's in there now(no bass but oh well).
The hayes book i've got doesn't show the speaker/radio diagram anywhere or i wouldnt've posted about it. Now all I need is a bezel since the po hacked the crap out of the one that was there so he could fit his $200 cd player he blew. It's a long story as to how he had the thing wired.. also, what was the point of having that speaker in the dash? Early sub or just another speaker?
The Center speaker was for the AM or, AM/FM monural radio, or the two way CB Radio option. If it has a speaker in the center of the dash, it had one of these three radios above.
All Factory AM/FM Stereo radios had speakers in the doors, no speaker in the dash, unless it had a Factory CB radio installed as well.
The above diagram that everyone is going goo-ga-ga over is in the "terrible" Haynes manual that I have, second page of the 1980 and 1981 diagrams "Air conditioner and/or heater, axle control and radio wiring diagram for 1980 and 1981".
I will admit the diagrams for the 87 and later trucks are not the greatest, but you will not find any better full fledged diagrams for the 84-86 trucks than in the back of the Haynes. And there is info for the 1980-1983, but you do have to do some flipping around for those years. Usually you can find what you need in the 84-86 section, they left it out of the 1980-83 section because it's redundant and is the same for all years.
Interesting. The later Haynes manual I have certainly does not, it's very generic and like what you find at autozone.

Hope this helps.
Doh! Now I need to go find one with the cb built into it lol since my dash has that speaker and the only am/fm/cb radio I have is a Dashmate by Sears that's in parts(the selector switch's busted and has been back-ordered since Nov. 07). Is this gonna be one of those rare radios?
EDIT: I s'pose I could use my Cobra all-in-one with it as an external speaker
o.O they had those back then? Jeeze, I've yet to see an early 80s with power mirrors. So the dash speaker was for the cb or mono radio? Truck must have had the cb at one time since it has both dash and door speakers, yes? I'm super psyched discovering something new about my truck!

Or the door speakers were added later. The panels still have the grille holes, just no speakers inside (on non-stereo equipped trucks). There is also a factory rubber conduit that runs from the door to the cab with the factory speaker wires inside. This is almost always missing on aftermarket installations.
And just when I thought I knew everything about my truck... I really appreciate the info on the dash speaker. Anything's possible since Ford did stuff to the truck after it was wrecked then repo'd... they coulda done anything to it.
I've spent the last 10 or so minutes looking at the Hayne's manual, but my wire colors don't seem to match up.I have the 1980-1991 Ford Pickup manual, that Franklin2 mentioned earlier.I have three connectors behind the dash that have nothing plugged in.Can anybody tell me what these wires are for?
1st connector is female rubber connector.
--Wire 1 is Yellow/Black(which I presume is switched DC power)
--Wire 2 is Lt Blue/Red(Dimmable back light IIRC)
2nd connector is a gray 3 slot plastic connector.
--Wires 1 and 2 are Red/Yellow Hash, and they both lead into the same slot.
--Wire 3 is Red/Green
--Wire 4 looks to be all Black(Ground?)
3rd connector is a dark brownish color.
--1st wire is Brown/Black dot
--2nd wire is White/Red stripe
I think I have the 1st connector right, but the other two baffle me.Any help is greatly appreciated.

For radio/stereo without an electronic display:
--Wire 1 is Yellow/Black(which I presume is switched DC power)
Correct - should be a black hash, it's for the switched radio power.
--Wire 2 is Lt Blue/Red(Dimmable back light IIRC) Also correct.
2nd connector is a gray 3 slot plastic connector.
--Wires 1 and 2 are Red/Yellow Hash, and they both lead into the same slot. Ignition-ON power, used to power engine solenoids and a few other things that
I forget.
--Wire 3 is Red/Green
I think this is gonna depend on if you have an ammeter or an idiot light; in
either case, I believe it's part of that circuitry.
--Wire 4 looks to be all Black(Ground?)Yes, ground.
3rd connector is a dark brownish color.
--1st wire is Brown/Black dot No idea
--2nd wire is White/Red stripe Red/white stripe = water temperature sender to gauge; white/red stripe is oil
pressure sender to gauge (or idiot light, as the case may be).
Added characters to make it think I said something.
BTW what year is your truck?
