I am about to buy a '58 Ford truck,it has a V8 in it now(not sure what???),but I am curious about the Y-block. Would it make for a RELIABLE daily driven engine? Not looking to set any records, just to drive and pull a 1000lb BBQ trailer with. And I am mainly talking the 292. Thanks

My 292 started running rough on my way through kentucky last fall. I thought maybe a plug wire or something like that was bad. Made it another 80 miles on the highway with no problem. Turns out it had a broken rod! These are tough a$$ engines!!
Haha I just remembered a good story involving the 292's brute strength.
Okay so this one time my buddy stalled his '65 Chevy truck trying to engage the clutch at the bottom of a steep hill. This truck was still a work in progress, so the electrical wiring wasn't hooked up right and the battery was dead. We couldn't even jumpstart it. So we ended up walking all the way to the top of the hill where his house was. My truck was parked up there. We decided that we could just tow his truck up the hill into his garage where we could try and fix it. So we grab the tow bar, hop into my truck, and drive down the hill. I park a couple feet in front of his truck and we hook the tow bar up to the bumpers. To prevent my truck from rolling back while we did this I really had to yank on the emergency brake till it was really tight. Once we had the towbar hitched up, I hopped in my truck, and proceeded to pull his Chevy truck up the hill.
Once I got to the top I realized that I forgot to release the emergency brake!!!!
My 292 just hauled a full size Chevy up a steep hill with the emergency brake fully on and I barely felt it! The motor didn't complain at all! I hope I didn't do real damage to the brakes though!
Absolute reliable I would say.
I drive it only in summer time, after 4 months just hop in and start.
Well, the 2 second try after that time.
Never had any problems the last 5 years.
Did a bunk of drywall in the bed of my 64 F100. Second gear at idle on a 3% grade. The boss was in the passengers seat and had just remarked that it would be a hard start.
