New Project F100

I just bought a very decent 1973 F100, short wheel base, 302. Everything is completely stock under the hood and interior/exterior. Even has factory tires, only has 51,000 miles on it. It runs decent but it smokes from getting to much fuel. I replaced all the gaskets in the factory motorcraft carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner. It is still running rich, anybody know what the problem could be? Its been setting for a long time but I put five gallons of fresh gas in the tank and cahnged the oil and filter. It hasent been driven in about 20 years, the owner just cranked it every now and then so it wouldnt lock up. Engine is very quiet with no abnormal noises.

Sounds like a sweet truck. 51,000 miles. WOW. Post pics

Those were good carbs.

It is black smoke?

Have you checked your choke for operation? Did you blow out all of the passages? Is the float sticking?

I'd rebuild it (including a nice bath in carb cleaner) and reset to factory specs. Should run like new by then.

Yes its black smoke, I cleaned out the passages the best I could with the tools I had. It starts right up but doesnt run real smooth, you can tell the carb isnt just right. Choke works correctly. I took the plugs out to check for signs of oil, they were clean/no oil, but very black from to much fuel.

The paint is thin in spots but still looks pretty good. Ill try to get pics if I remember. I only gave 500 bucks for it.

Every guys idea of "clean" is different, soak it in a tub of Berryman's B-12 then rebuild it, have you confirmed spark at each plug?

It sounds like you only cleaned it, but you did not adjust it. Cleaning is only one step.

Search around, or visit the fuel forum, you will find answers that will remedy the issues.

My idea of clean is much higher. I do FOUR steps!

1) GUNK (Solder Seal)'s Carburetor cleaner
2) Kerosene
3) B12
4) Compressed air

Varnish doesn't stand a chance! Varnish is nasty and will plug up anything where fuel sits.

Not trying to abuse the truck, but I was just trying to narrow down the problem. At a stop sign I decided to give er all she had, roasted the crap out of the tires and never missed a beat but at idle and part throttle its over fueling.

These are very easy carbs to rebuild. Taking the top cover off once you have the proper rebuild kit will make it obvious to you how easy it is. Is there still a tag on the carburetor that reads something like "D3TE-AA" ??

Also, look on the right side of the float bowl, (drivers side, towards the front of carb) and see what number is stamped there. Should be like "1.08"

The accelerator pump diaphragm (the one where you see the little lever on the front of the carb) is probably dried up and not giving you the proper shot of fuel off idle. That and the fact varnish could have gummed up the power valve a bit.

Rebuild kit shouldnt cost you more than $25 USD

I'm no expert, but could the float be fuel saturated? When I rebuilt my carb, it really helped having a tach, and a 5-gas machine.

Carb has new accelerator pump diaphram, new power valve, new needle and seat, all new gaskets, float didnt feel like it had any gas in it, I shook it and couldnt hear anything. Carb does still have orginal tag on it.

I took the plugs back out today. Some of the cylinders are running properly plugs were brownish/tan color. Some of the plugs are still black from to much fuel. Maybe I have some bad plug wires and not getting good spark? I know yall are gonna rag me for this from not doing it already but the truck still has the original Motorcraft plug wires and I have not replaced them yet.
