My son just bought a 2001 F350 diesel yesterday. 140 k miles. Today it won't start. So far he checked oil - at the add mark. The tach moves a little when cranking. Just does not want to catch. He is at Walmart getting some oil right now. I told him to check fuses. He said the placement of the fuses did not match the label on the fuse cover or his haynes manual. When cranking, he doesn't know if there is any smoke at the tail pipe because it is windy today. When he gets back, after topping up the oil, if it still justs cranks but doesn't catch we'll try unplugging the ICP. What else should he look for? He doesn't have a code reader. I'm in California, He is in Norfolk VA. (Navy) I own a 97 F250HD with 7.3 diesel so I'm not sure what differences there are on his 2001. I do know that this site has the answers!
And if he can't, I live in Suffolk and have 2 extra CPSs. I'm working evening shift, so I can't bring it to him, but if he wants to drive the 20 minutes from the base to my house I can hook him up with one to try.
It may be batteries are weak. They need at least 10.5 volts in order to fire the injectors. Sometimes there is enough juice to turn the truck over but not enough to fire it up. Try jump starting it. If the jump works, it's probably batteries. Get 2, repeat 2, from Walmart, 850 CCA'a and they have a big warranty. It will be about $150, but then you can replace them at walmart and they will honor the warranty all over the country.

Well, the CPS got the truck started. But it has no power and is idling rough. He says the tach reads about 500 at idle. Very slow acceleration when he tried to drive it. Two new batteries have now been installed. Does this sound like it is not firing on all eight? I think we should start looking at wiring to the injectors. What do the experts think? I just don't see what changed from yesterday when he put 40 miles on it to today and not running right.
How rough does it idle and is the check engine light on? If the CEL is on, then I'd agree it's time to check the wiring. Do you know how to tell him to check the wiring with an ohm meter? We only have 1 9 pin connector on each cover instead of the 2 connectors you have. Outside 2 pins front and rear are glow plugs. Center is the common wire.
I've been reading this site about the pinout for the uvc harness. I just sent him the info. HE will check it tomorrow. He said the truck has a service engine soon light and check engine light is off. I have not yet found in reading what can cause the service soon light to come on.

If it has a UVCH problem, it will throw a check engine light. The problem could be HPOP related. Really gonna need a scanner at this point, otherwise you're chasing your tail and guessing.

Would you clarify this for me? I'm a little slow. SES and CEL refer to the same warning light, just by different names. Is the SES light on or not? Rough running and no light are usually related to things the PCM can't see like fuel pressure (restriction).

Sorry for the confusion. He thought there were two separate lights. Only one light with different names. The service engine soon light is on. I think he was just getting very tired from being at it all day. Tomorrow will be a fresh start.
