Did we ever decide if all the housings are interchangeable or not? i.e will the stock 1.15 from a 94-97 turbo fit a 99-03 or -38r? I've looked at pretty much every picture I could find on the internet and they all look the same.
And with that in mind. Could a person use a stock 94-97 EBPV housing instead of the adapter? It uses the same three bolt flange.
I think it would probably bolt on, but the exhaust wheels are different sizes and would rub. IIRC, the up pipes are different in that some have the babies butt, some don't.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that the whole -38 family used the same 64mm 57 trim wheel. Is that not the case? And if it isn't, how much smaller is the wheel on the GT-38 compared to the GTP-38 and -38R?

No I'm not positive, I just remember a thread about it a while ago and it seems like the answer was that they are not the same.
Actually I did find out just the other day. The 38 and the 38R share the same exhaust wheel, and the turbine housings are interchangable.
Compressor wheels are different, so the compressor housings are not interchangable.
As for the van turbo, I'm not 100% sure. I think JTHarvey found out a while back that the van turbo does use a different turbine wheel than the SD turbo.
I used to have a Garret PDF that showed the all the specs for all three turbo's. Actually I still have the link, but it doesn't work any more. Evidently Garrett dropped it from their site some time ago.
The only snippit of information that I've found so far is a seven year old post in which a Garrett tech at the time said that the "early" 99 van turbo has a "slightly" larger turbine wheel....and in another post it was referenced as 64.25mm vs. 64mm. I wonder if the clearance in the housings is really so tight that 1/4 of one millimeter really makes a difference.

Thanks. So would that apply to the early model 38 as well?
Reason I'm asking is there is a chance I can get an OBS turbo.....and I really want to be able to use the housing off of it.
I have noticed that a few sources are selling .84 housings as upgrades for the OBS turbo, which leads my to believe that all of them will interchange.....possibly excepting the van turbo.
I'm relatively sure the OBS turbos have a square input flange where ours are round. I don't think they're interchangeable even if the wheels are the same.
On the van turbos, the "rumor" is that the exhaust wheels are different, but I couldn't tell any difference at all having them side-by-side. They both fit in either housing when I had mine apart.
...and looking at that pic, I'm REALLY glad ours are round. I'll bet getting the 4th bolt closest to the compressor back plate out is a real BIEOTCH....
