So I should get my truck back from the dealer tommorrow. They have had it for almost two weeks. Needed head gaskets and EGR cooler. I want to know if anyone if has just done gears with 37s instead of a tuner? And if you have how is the power? I just don't want to go down this road again of no truck, it has sucked. If I do the gears should I go 4.30 or 4.56? I had the Superchips Flashpaq (which I already sold). It helped with the power but obviously not the engine life.
4.30s will put you back to the stock end ratio as 3.73s with stock tires. 4.56 would give you a little more low end grunt, but your RPMs will be a little high on the highway. I think 4.30s would be a very wise move because it will take the strain of larger tires off your transmission.
Thanks for the help. How do you think it would help out mileage wise? That was the main reason for the Flashpaq. It helped with the mileage quite a bit. It did add a lot of power that was rarely used but it obviously isn't safe power. I've been tossing up either gears or a SCT. The SCT would be cheaper but I really don't want to blow my HG again. I've never even drove a F250 stock so I guess if I regeared it would be a whole lot better than the 3.73 and 37s.
Town mileage will go up with lower gears. If you run under 75mph your highway mileage will probably go up a little. Honestly, I didn't notice as much power increase as I expected with the lower gears, the SCT did a lot more. The lower gears would definitely be better for your tranny though. It just depends how much you want to spend, gears aren't cheap.
I'm running 4.10's in my 03 F350 6.0L with 38's, and it is not that bad. City is a little slow, but highway is really nice. I'm also thinking about a tuner: What is the diff between the SCT or the Banks tuner? Can you run either in a lower "performance" or tow mode to be safer?
What would be the safest. Doing the gears or an SCT. Which would prolong the life of my trucks engine, tranny etc?
that's a tuff question. doing 4.30's or 4.56's would definitly take a lot of strain off your tranny and help out around town because of your 37's. also it would put your truck back into its designed powerband when on the freeway
if you went with a SCT and had stock gear's with 37's i would only go with lower power tunes and have the tuner consintrate on tranny tuning.
if it was me i would go with the gear (4.30's unless i planned on bigger tires down the road)
go with the gears and extend the life of yor drive train dramatically. i wish i would have done them a long time ago. remember the snap your truck had with stock rubber. well you get that with 37's and you can light up those little rice burners like nothing.lol. well you need the programmer for some of em too but its still great.
i'm kinda in the same boat with just 35's. i've got the stock gears still in and i don't have a tuner yet. i was wondering if i should go with 4.10s or 4.30s or just get a tuner? not trying to but in on your question but i thought since the topic was open.
Ruffneck I never had it stock. I bought it with the 37s on it so I'm sure it would be better than when I got it. Do you think it would have as much power as it did with the Flashpaq and 3.73 gears?
probably a little more snap low end but you will loose on the highway over the programmer. but again the gears are an investment in your drive train and the life of it. and that of course depends a lot on your driving habits. lol. as for 35's they are barely bigger then stock tires so go with a programmer. i recommend SCT and i've own bully dog and edge and now SCT X3 and would never go back.
ruffneck, all i seem to hear is how nice the SCT X3 is. Right now there is an EDGE on my 03 F350 6.0l. Do you know the diff between the X3 and the SCT Livewire. I kind of like the option of having EGT and other live readouts while driving/towing/etc, which the livewire gives. Thanks.
I've heard the X3 is still preferred because the LiveWire can be buggy. Really for the important readings, EGT, fuel pressure, you should just install gauges.
Thanks. I will do some more research on the X3. All things point to use it over anything else. Seperate gauges would be best, too. Thanks for the info.
