The "evaporator" is inside the heater box as is the heater core (hence the name "heater box) and is about as difficult an item to get to as there could be on your truck. They share the main housing and there is a door that swings to select whether you get air through the heater or the AC side. The hot engine coolant normally flows through the heater core whenever the engine is running. A lot of people will put a valve in the heater hose to prevent hot fluid from circulating through the box during the summer months. I have some pics of my valve install on my van;
This is a manual valve with a bypass hose.
yea on my 06 the factory installed an auto one that is attached to a vaccum line. not sure exactly what the parameters are on it to open or close the valve.
You can blow some compressed air through the cooler to make sure that there aren't any clogs for airflow (be careful not to damage any fins).
There's little to no airflow across the condenser during city driving (unless your engine fan is running, and even then it's no comparison to freeway driving), so your A/C efficiency is much lower at slower speeds. Granted, even though it's not as effienct, the Super Duty's A/C performance leaves a lot to be desired. You'd think that a heavy duty truck with a heavy duty cooling system for the engine (8+ freakin' gallons!) would have a heavy duty cooling system for the cab!
I try to avoid recirc since that recycles the cabin air. I prefer fresh air when I can. Unfortunately my A/C is so bad that if it's more than 75F outside, I get almost no cooling unless I'm on the freeway or in recirc. I'm on the fence about trying a charge or if I should evacuate the whole system for a complete refill.
This is something you kind of have to let go. The A/C in your house recirculates, could you imagine if you sucked in outside air and tried to cool it the bill you would have! The SD a/c is not as good as it could be in general. Some trucks are better than others. My 97 Heavy had great a/c. Cold almost instantaneously and consistent. If you are comparing to another vehicles operation, and you do the same thing keeping it on fresh and it works better, there may not be much you can do. Also look up the mod on shutting off the heater core as this makes a big difference too.
