I have a quick question, I asked last week about changing the transmission fluid and I was told to use Mircon V but I in everything that I read from CHILTON it says not to use Mercon V, so my question is what Mercon do I use then and I am going to change my Transfer case and power steering as well. Anther problem I cannot find Mercon 5 anywhere either! Except for Super Tech from Walmart Which I refuse to use. and I can only find 13 quarts I think I need 20+ Quarts.
I am a 2000 F250 7.3 Stock 4 wheel drive. I was also ask if I have a shallow pan or a deep pan, and told them that I had a deep pan am I right?
Trans, 17 qts, transfer case, 3 qts (I think -- check me), power steering about 2.
There was a Ford TSB released a couple years ago stating the specs for Mercon V were changed to allow its use in out trucks, so yes, you can use it. I have been for over a year now. I'm using Full Syn Mobil1 ATF (Merc V). Lots of places have it. Where are you located?
The 4x4 pan is deep, but I have a 2WD, and mine is deep too. Found out after pulling mine and seeing that I had the wrong filter. The "2WD" one has about a 3/4" pickup, the 4x4 has a 2" pickup, so you should be good...
Okay. Call around your auto parts places and ask for Mercon V. I had the guy at my local store bring me out a three cases (Mobil1 comes six to a case).
IIRC, all 4R100's have the deep pan. The shallow/deep option was on the E4OD transmissions. Mark Kovalsky mentioned this before; and all the 4R100 2wd's I've seen had the deep pan also.

Costco still carries Mercon / Dexron III, Chevron brand. But now, since Ford stopped licensing the Mercon name, it's called "MD-3, compatible with vehicles using Mercon or Dexron III".
Since I buy my Delo 400 there, I bought the trans fluid there too. Don't remember the price though.
Mercon natural from NAPA. 146,000 trouble free miles, a lot of them pulling a heavy trailer, I ain't changin now. Hey LSU guy, I have the mag hytec pan and I think i took 26 qts last time. That included draining the torque converter and blowing the cooler lines. Seems like it was 17.7 for stock plus 8 more for the mag hytec. Could be wrong, doing it from memory, and at my age that's never a good idea. Go dogs.

I asked Mark Kovalsky about the re-released Dex III/Merc fluid, since Ford started recommending the Merc V, and he told me, "Ford and GM no longer license Dexron III/MERCON. Nobody is watching what's in them. MERCON V is licensed by Ford so there is some monitoring the fluid."
Take it for what's it worth, but I won't use the unlicensed Dex III/Merc fluid.
