You can Adapt a AOD tranny to the 385 series engines. Though its not easy or cheap.. in my mind.. not worth it..
I called Art Carr trannies, and they have a AOD built to handle crazy horsepower (800) and will bolt to your 370/429/460. Though it costs $2400, plus you will need their special torque converter, that will run you another $300 or so... and then you need other doo dads...
Personally.. its not worth the hassle to me to gain another 3 or 4mpg. You will most likely spend $3000 and 10 hours of your time doing the swap.
As far as the E40D goes.. you will need the computer... so that again to me is a hassle...
Nothing clean and easy as far as I know..
You could also get an overdrive/underive unit and bolt it to the output of your Xfer Case (if you have a 4x4) and get OD that way... but again.. its $2300.
So if you weight out how much more you spend in Gas to the time and effort to getting overdrive... then personally to me its not worth it... I only put 10,000 miles a year on my truck... so if I get 10mpg or 14 mpg... I pay for 1000 gallons or $1500 or $1070 Annually.. difference of $430
Thanks all for the info,I only have about 4000. into about a3/4 restored 75 f100 short box. I thought it would make a good road truck for parts hunting with o.d. but for that kind of $ I will stay with the c-6 and put some 2:75s in for gears. Big Thanks again pod
I have spent alittle time thinking about this issue and it looks to me that the most economically sensible idea would be to use a C6 with a lockup torque converter----which will only give you a 1:1 ratio(no slippage) and then put your money into a gear vendors ODrive(2,300) which will bolt on the back of the C6 -----I believe----then you have an auto that is bullet proof and user friendly and the GV-OD seems to be the best unit available for the money!!!!!comments Please.........fd
Not saying that it can't be done, but how do you use a lock-up convertor on a non-computer controlled tranny. I would be interested in doing this if it were possiable(sp), it sure would cut down on heat during towing. It would also yield a little better gas milage.:-)
