Engine Pinging

I screwed up and need help to see how bad I did and what I need to fix it.

I was in a great hurry when I changed my oil last time and got too much oil in the engine. I drove it that way a bit until I could get it drained down to 15 quarts.

Now I have an engine that is blowing a great amount of smoke out the exhaust and is clicking or pinging a lot. It continues even after I I got the right amount of oil in the engine.

What may I have done and what will I probably have to do to get it fixed?

Signed: a mechanic want-to-be that shouldn't-be.

Have you got some idea of how much of a overfill you're talking about here?

1 extra quart isn't the culprit here... Something else is wrong.

What kind of oil did you put into the engine?

Rotella T 15w-40 is the oil. I forgot the part where the exhaust is white and a lot of it on acceleration. The exhaust is all the time. The pinging only happens after it gets up to temperature.

Could be a bad injector. Has your Check Engine light come on?

White smoke is usually unburned fuel or water. Oil would have a bluish tint to it, and a very distinctive smell. As far as that goes, antifreeze also has a distinct smell coming out of the exhaust.

No engine light has come on. The smoke smells very much like a petroleum base to it. Very heavy alcahol smell.

Could be the turbo seals went caput and now you're spitting oil out the exhaust?

OK, like I said at the beginning, I am a 'shouldn't-be' mechanic.

What do you mean by a buzz test/CCT?

A buzz test is a test to make sure the injectors are working okay. CCT is a cylinder contribution test and I can't remember why its helpful right now

The buzz test simply tests the ELECTRICAL portion of the IDM to injector solenoid winding to make sure that there are no circuit problems. Internal injector problems will not show up on this test.

The cylinder contribution test will measure the camshaft rotational velocity differences between each injector by disabling one injector at a time and finding out which cylinders contribute equally or insufficiently to engine operation.
