well i finnally ran across a deal i couldnt say no to.... a 78 351W with all parts except carb and exhaust manifold for passanger side.... kinda rough all around but for 70 bones..... anyway i'm gonna rebuild and build up as much as i can without breaking the bank... one part at a time basically... any suggestions for performance parts and part dealers?
i plan to build it mainly for low end torque and still get decent mileage... thinkin about going with a dual plane Edelbrock intake with a 600ish?? CFM edelbrock 4 barrel carb, a decent cam, port and polish the heads, weight match the pistons, headers( *will mustang headers {302} fit my 85 150?) and beautiful dual exhaust... will bolt up to a T-18 tranny that has the smallblock housing ( currently bolted to my 300 ) any suggestions?
First thing I suggest is find another set of heads, the 78 heads have hugh combustion chambers and small valves. Options are either 69-74 351 heads or late model GT40 heads, but even a set of late model E7 heads are a step up if you port them. Use a cam like the Comp 35-238-3 with flat top pistons and you have the potential for over 300hp and 400 ft lbs TQ.
The transmission will bolt up, but remember that the 300 flywheel has no counterweight so it can't be used with the 351. You'll need a 351 or early 302 flywheel with 28.2 oz in imbalance.
