hey guys, im kinda new to building up an engine...well actually, this is my first vehicle where ive actually gotten this far. some background first. its a stock 351W in a 1997 old bodystyle F350. the truck is lifted 6 inches with 38" tires. has the stock 4:10 gears. also has true dual exhaust from the o2 sensors back.
i wanna build the motor to make some decent torque, while boosting hp. is there some sort of unspoken order of importance that i should follow when adding parts? i wanna get long tube headers, computer chip, new ignition and dist. and perhaps a cam and all that stuff down the line. any other suggestions? im kinda new to the engine stuff, so bear with me. thanks alot.
Depends if you want to tweak what you have or make a substantial jump in power. To tweak the stock motor for more TQ add longtube headers and 1.7 ratio rockers. To get a substantial jump in power you'll need better heads and intake, a cam, bigger injectors and an upgraded fuel system to supply them. The cam, heads, or intake alone on the otherwise stock motor will make a little more power, but nowhere near what the combination will do together.
Of course, the shortcut to a healthy boost in HP and TQ is to add a blower.
