Jumper Cables

We have to jump start stuff on a pretty regular basis and I'd like to have a system like this:

Lexan Plug Jump-Start Set with 500 Amp Clamps - Superior Signals - Mfg# STC254

On all of dad's pickups the battery cable clamps are all chewed up because of the jumper cables being hooked to them.

Now if you were to install that system in a truck is there a benefit or disadvantage of hooking to one side or the other?

I figure I'd hook the cables straight to the passenger side battery and run the plug out to the grill so I could hook the cables up with the hood closed. I figure passenger side because you wouldn't have the air intake and everything in your way.

Granted my airbox is going away soon, but I just thought I'd post up and ask.

Thanks in advance, guys.

You can hook to either battery, doesn't matter. And, you can build something like what you linked to for much cheaper (I looked into it a while back but haven't got around to doing it yet). If you go to graingers.com and dig around you can find those connectors. Then all you'd need is some wire and ring terminals.

Hmm. I'll check that out. I do like AW Direct though since their HQ is right in CT, but I'll check out what is involved in making one.

I do like the idea of being able to do all that with the hood shut too. Keeps everything a little quieter while you're already frustrated because stuff won't start.

Hey Rocket,

I wanted to (and haven't yet) do something simular. So I posted my question got some good links for the connectors, and one of the best was try NAPA - See my post below:

That's a great idea. I've only seen that on Tow trucks.
You could always mount it to the Drivers side and run the connections out your "Zoodad" mod.

AW Direct is primarily a towing supply company. They've got tons of cool stuff that I'd love to have on my truck, but can't quite afford.

I'm thinking I'll go from my passenger side battery and just run it out right through the grill no issues.

The issues with running it through the Zoodad are:

1: I don't have my Zoodad done yet. (will get done before the 6637 and jumpers go in)
2: I'd be afraid that the hard edges on a Zoodad would tend to chafe the wires a bit. As it sits I plan on adding an extra bit of wire loom or something around the wiring that goes to the plug to protect against any chafing.

I ordered the AW catalog a lil while back and didnt browse their website first and was shocked by most of their prices. Most of the lights and "towing" stuff are overpriced. Make sure you look around before you buy from them. I do love this concept though. I saw that plug on a truck about a week ago and if it wasnt for AW I wouldnt have known what it was! I think its a great idea but not for 126!

Tristan their prices are going to be a bit higher than other places since they are based out of CT. That means they're paying CT Taxes which are a fair bit higher than other places as well.

Certain stuff they are sky high on, but other stuff is priced pretty reasonably. It's best when you can get on the sales they have at times.

A while back they had AM/FM/MP3 hearing protectors for like 50 bucks.

Normally from AW they're 79$ and I just checked Gemplers and they want 99$

Not trying to be defensive you just have to know what something is worth.

Pete,I ran a set of these on my tool truck and they work great.

Hook up to the pass side batt, because that gets the most juice from the alt.

Thanks, Brad. That's the sort of answer I was thinking someone would have.

That's good news since from my recollection the passenger side would be easier to route. I'm sure there's something in the way that I'm not thinking of right now though.

While we're on an electrical note: What batteries do you guys run? I think I'm about due for a set. I'm not going to buy them until the truck is ready to be a daily driver since I don't wanna buy new batteries if the truck is just going to sit.

Something like a set of batteries is worth whatever it costs since if I don't have good ones they could leave me stuck in the cold. I'm currently looking at a set of Optima yellow-tops. Any feedback on batteries from anyone?

Pete has got me interested in this setup once again dangit! I have plenty of 4ga red power cable from my car audio days. I just dont jump enough people to justify the 20-30 dollars for the plug ends right now. It would definitely be a lot easier to pull up and just clamp, clamp and plug though!

Edit:

Pete, I run AZ gold/yellow duralast series batteries. 100 bucks a pop and a 8 yr warranty (3yr free replacement)
