transmission problems

i have a '95 with a 302 and the e40d transmission. the other day i lost all forward gears, but still have reverse. when i shift into any of the forward gears, it just acts like it is in neutral. i checked the linkage is working fine and when i pulled codes all i got was egr problems. could this be something fairly inexpensive to fix such as a valve or solenoid or is it time for a new tranny?

I am not an expert but it sounds like the forward clutch is burnt or the servo has failed.
I hope someone else will chime in and say I`m wrong.
