hello.. i have a 92 f-150 4x4 with a 302 c.i engine and a non working automatic transmission. when you put the transmission in drive the engine rpm will change as normal but there is no forward gears at all. reverse works just fine through. i been reading some about how these transmissions may have a sensor whick would cause shifting problems. i was wondering could this sensor be the cause why there is no forward gears? i am already planning on replacing the transmission anyway. i have mostly just been curious..
thank you for your time
The button confirms you have the E4OD transmission.
There is a component within the E4OD that in 1st-3rd, it must be held locked in place, but in 4th it rotates. To accomplish this, Ford put a device called a sprag on it. It lets this part rotate one way, but if it tries to turn the other way it holds it in place. The sprag is kind of weak, so Ford also put a dedicated clutch-pack on that component. This clutch however is only activated in the manual low ranges, or when O/D is canceled. The logic behind this being that if you cancel O/D or shift into the low ranges, you probably are trying to move/tow something large.
As you may have guessed by now this sprag often fails completely. However canceling O/D in drive will enable that secondary clutch, which will allow you to regain use of drive. However the damaged sprag will slowly continue to deteriorate and may damage the rest of your transmission.
Basically if canceling O/D makes it so your truck moves again, you need to rebuild the transmission. If the truck doesn't start moving, further diagnostics need to be done.
