Yeah I dont know I thought it was rediculous too. They came with tires that were bald so I couldnt even use the tires. I went to literally 15 different junk yards and 200 was the cheapest I could do.
1) Some guys spend a lot of money on their rides. This means that some trucks might have performance upgrades. In other words don't just look for what you need. I found a dirty old edelbrock carb on a truck. Paid $50 for it, cleaned it up and sold it on ebay for $250.
2) I like looking for future projects. Something like---> If I take an 1100cc motor cycle and weld that old tercel front end to it, I could have a good mpg 3 wheeler that would fly. Most projects never happen but it is fun to imagine what could happen.
3) For the parts you need, make sure they will work. An alternator with wires that has been sitting where rain can get to it is not a good buy.
I needed about 6 lights for my '84 F250. head lights, tail lights, etc....
Got them all at a U-Pull-It yard and it only cost me $15 for all the lights and a door handle.
