Elliot, I would head to the library and look at some old Motor or chilton repair manuals. I have seen the NP 542s listed before, and went out to truck salvage yards searching, but I never found any 542s. Where did you find a 542SL, and what engine is in front of it ? DF

Got to looking in my 77 truck shop manual---it lists (2) 5 speeds with od---(1) the new process---542-FO and (2) the clark 280-VO-----my O.D. designations are different than what you guys have shown---I don't know where the difference lies...........fd

I should have added more info. In my 83 "Motor truck & diesel" repair manual, it lists a 540,541 & a 542, but no ratio's. According to the vin # and the trans & RA code, and talking to my Ford Parts man (he getting tired of all my questions) it has a 1974 361, 2Barrel, 542FL, and a Eaton 2sp. Just found all my notes;
1974 F 600
Vin# F60EVS 81795
Trans is Diget 0 or letter o
RA is F3J Eaton 2sp 6.33/8.81
When the mud hole dries out a little, I'll double ck the trans.
