Lately i've been driving my truck down the road and i have noticed i have to fight it a little from going to the left. It's not tracking straight or at least it seems. The weird thing is is that after a left hand turn, it pulls to the left. After a right hand turn it pulls to the right. It pulls more when its pulling to the left than when its pulling to the right and the pull isnt hard its just annoying. Anyone have any idea what i could try to do myself before i go to the shop.
I havent serviced the steering in quite a long time. Ill pull it into my shop and jack it up and mess around. I loosened the steering box a little and it seemed to help it out. After i did it i thought the problem was gone but during a drive i still noticed it just a little bit.
It's gotten really bad lately. Whenever i turn going faster than 20mph the steering gets tougher and after i finish turning i cant drive straight because it will pull hard to the left if i just turned left and when i try to pull the wheel to the right to straighten it out it falls to the right and pulls hard to the right. Its hard to describe how it feels, its like if the wheel is straight it will teeter totter between left and right while im trying to drive straight. It seems to go away after i keep correcting it for a minute but it will come back again as soon as i turn the wheel more than 360 degrees and moving at normal speed. If i take it really slow through a turn and turn as little as possible it isnt as bad. I dont know whats going on down there. The truck has 122,000 miles or so.
Id have the steering box looked at i had a bronco do the same thing then one day it just had power steering to the right. It was a big surprise as it was snowy that day, it made corecting a slide a joy.
I finally fixed it. It was the steering stabilizer. It was all messed up. I had the front end off the ground and i started the truck up and moved the steering wheel back and forth and didnt get any problems and then i got a closer look at the stabilizer and realized that i hit a rock against it or someone tried jacking the truck up and part of the arm on the jack dented it in. I took it off and everything was fine when i drove so i think it was binding up from where the dent was, causing me to fight it to keep it straight on the road. Now i just gotta look at the hubs because i think the passenger side is engaged because when i turned the wheels while they were off the ground the drivers side spun smooth but made a weird pepper grinder type of noise as it spun but and when i spun the passenger it spun the 4wd axle and made the noise but it was louder and came from the hub on the drivers side. I have pictures to show what the stabilizer looks like.
