1963 shift tube

Gents my 3 on da tree quit shiftin, took it all apart, a buddy welded it up where it was all wallered out. It was all wallered out where the gear shifter works the shift tube. My question is was there a hole in the shift tube or was there a slot?? And also there is a piece slideing back and forth in the shift tube that I suppose the bottom bearing?? Seems like it needs this on top of the shift tube as the shaft does not line up center coming up through the column. Any answers appreciated. Shelly Oh yes and if it was just a hole in the shift tube, approximatly how far from the end and what size hole, Buddy welded it up before I could measure it.

The shift tube has a round hole (11/32" in diameter) in it, over that hole, as original, there was a thin rectangular reinforcement plate spot welded on the tube that also had a hole.

If someone removed that plate because it worked loose, the hole in the tube would soon become elongated.

There are two like bearings and bearing retainers in the column, one each is located (1961/64) above the upper flange, one each is located below the flange.

These bearings and retainers are still available from Ford, prolly autoparts stores as the F100/250's used the same ones from 1961 thru 1972, also used on the cars from the same era.

Picture of shift tube??

Is there anywhere I could look at a pic of an original shift tube to get an idea of what that rectangular piece looked like or does it not have to be that precise of fit? Thanks Shelly

Approximately 2" long, 3/4" of an inch wide, 1/8" thick.

Just one more shift tube question

I have something sliding back and forth in the shift tube, what is that piece?
