sounds like you have a 30 spline 60 rear and a regular dana 44 front..just like what came in all 77.5-79 250's. You must be thinking of the pre 77.5 f-250's that had 44 fronts with external locking hubs...so they looked bigger but were not any stronger than the 44 you have up front
the only 77.5-79 f-250 that came with anything heavier had a dana 60 front and that would have had the 4" diameter hubs
1973 and later: The Dana 60 ID tag will be found just to the left (drivers side) of the inspection cover (to the right [passenger side] on 4WD front axles).
This tag is 2" x 1/2" and is bolted on with two bolts.
The ID tag number will be 7 or 8 digits, like this: 603010-1 or 603010-11.
The ID number may also be stamped on the axle tubes on both Dana 60's and 44's.
The Ford ID axle tags for the Dana 44 & 60 are under one of the bolts that holds the inspection cover on.
But...usually by this time...these tags are missing.
If you find any numbers, post them...they can be decoded and this will tell exactly what the axles came from, the ratios, and other details.
There are a couple of very simple ways to deetermine which axle you have.
Its safe to assume that you have a D60 in the rear. Nothing fancy, just a plain old 30 spline D60.
As for the front count on it being a high pinion D44.
To determine this, simnply look at the steering arm and see how many bolts attach the arm to the knuckle. Three bolts in a row will be a D44. 4 bolts in a square orietation would be a king pin D60.
Chances are very good that you do not have the 60 front.
