Ok I believe I've got my fuel leak done. I primed the fuel system with clean diesel, cranked twice at 5 second intervals and it started. I ran it for 5 minutes, no leaks, shut it down, let it cool, cleaned and painted the damaged area, and went to start it and..CLICK.. Solonoid seems fine, starter has power (test light), all recent batterys fully charged, all connections and grounds cleaned and tight. It currently has the Mitsubishi starter. I have read posts that say that this is no longer available but a PSD unit will fit?? What about the Denso??? Does anyone have part numbers??? Oh yeah, i tried the hammer trick...no go. Or am I missing something??
try crossing the solenoid on the pass fender.and a powerstroke starter will not fit.trust me i know for a fact i tried it.and look on ebay for a starter they are way cheaper than a parts store and they come with a warranty as well.but i owuld try crosing the solenoid on the fender and check to see if the starter is getting atleast 12 volts probably be around 14.6 volts.hopefully this helps
Curious cleaned and painted the damage, what was damaged.
If your starter just clicks and has not been dragging I would look at the connections everywhere, it is possible your selonoid gave up the ghost though.
I tried crossing the solonoid above the passenger headlight (mine's an E350) and nothing. Remember, it does click so it should be ok.?.?.? It measured about 13.7 volts so I think thats acceptable. Just pulled the starter out (top bolt was less than fun) and will take it down to be tested tomorrow. Any thoughts about the different brands??? Nippondenso vs. Mitsubishi vs. Motorcraft vs.--vs.--??? Cost is kind of important but service life and durability as well as cranking power are more important in my book. I've had bad luck in the past with certain rebuilt parts and definately WILL NOT buy that brand. I don't mind paying a little (within reason) more and get QUALITY and good WARRANTY and long service life. I have high quality and huge battery cabling and it cranked REALLY GOOD before this. Who likes what???? And why???
Yeah my bet is the starter mounted solonoid. Paint damage as in it stripped/wrinkled/bubbled the paint off the drivers side valve cover so I repainted it while I was there. Hey why do these have two different solonoids?? Is that so they (Ford) could use the same harness on both gas and diesel???
I'm not sure why but the starter selonoid on the one I have in my old highboy went out way back in the mountains so I hard wired it and fixed it just like a gasser ond just used the one on the fender to get home. It worked fine so I never changed it.
When I started removing the one in there now, I found the trigger wire to the lower solenoid was broken, so I fixed the wire and took the starter back.
Now the solenoid is starting to click a couple times before it will crank, so I guess I should have changed the starter anyway.
The solenoid seems to be what goes on them most of the time, but with a lifetime warranty, I just change the whole starter or I lose the warranty.
Mitsubishi is the only option in my book.
The lifetime warranty starter is a bit over 300 dollars at NAPA before the core charge is reimbursed.
It isn't from that company, but that is the starter that I am using. Works great. Spins easier and uses less amperage than the original starter in my '93.
I don't recall what I paid for mine (I'm thinking 140-150), but that seems like a good deal.
Thanks guys, I just got back from the parts stores (yes 2) and bought a new Denso style and a solonoid for my Mitsubishi. I got a deal on the Denso because my neighbor owns a parts store. He didn't have a solonoid for the Mitsu so I went to a chain for that. Turns out that the solenoid had been replaced before with the same one I bought!! Now I'll have a backup spare for all the just-in-case scenerios. Have to buy cheap beer though, but that's another story.....
