The fluid you put in the front diff. will be ok. The front is an open diff. so it won't make a difference. If you have a Dually, you have the Dana-80. If you have a SWR you have the 10.5 Sterling. Dana-80 is only on the dually.

I'm sorry about the video. If you couldn't tell I'm still green in the diesel department but I found those video to be very enlightening as I knew nothing about the PowerStroke and I at least now know something but these forums have been EXTREMELY enlightening.

Man every time I get on here I learn something new.

First I should say I haven’t put anything in or on the truck yet so it’s not too late to return or exchange something.

I have a SRW so it’s a sterling.

Visseroth I really like those videos just the guy himself is annoying, now I wish they contained more accurate info because something like that with good info would be great because I’m a visual learner. I’m like you this is my first PS or any diesel for that matter so everything is new to me; I'm like a paranoid new mother freaked out by every little sound.

Well time for bed now

Man, I know what you mean!!!
When I found this truck I listened to what it was trying to tell me. The only thing I could find when this truck was first talking to me was that there's a noise coming from the back of the motor or trannie. I have managed to make the noise a bit quieter but it's still there and soon I'll be troubleshooting it more as I think it is my up pipe exhaust leak which is soon to be fixed.
But last week (and this is how I relate the most) I accidentally put gas in my truck. I had about 6 to 8 gallons of diesel left and filled up at a station I was unfamiliar with and put 30 gallons of premium unleaded in my baby.
I managed to get it all out and get diesel back in it without damaging anything but I was so freaked out that I was being hyper sensitive to the noises of the vehicle. I was just waiting for something to break or pop. I was afraid I broke my truck!!!

So, yea. I'll try to help as well but these guys on here are absolutely crazy with knowledge and their willingness to help makes a person almost want to tear up in happiness since it seems that most the world is so cold and greedy anymore.

Anyhow, back to the topic at hand. Sorry, had to reply guys.

Yeah, just use 'em to get a look at whatever you're working on. Don't pay attention to some of his methods (like using an impact wrench on the turbo wheel!! Or removing the valve cover to get the turbo compressor housing off ) or some of his messages (like changing your HPOP oil. )..... LMAO!!!

eastman moved me up here for 9 months from Houston then separated with me, no I’m not mad at them or anything like that...

I think in the near future I may be moving back to Houston there are quite a few more options for an engineer there than there are here.

But I got good news this morning; I have an interview in Kingsport tomorrow and one with NASA Wednesday.

Just a recap to be sure I have everything straight as far as quantity and type of fluids goes.

Coolant = 4 gallons green + many gal distilled water

Rear diff = 4 qts 75w-140 with friction modifier

Front diff = 3qts 75w-90 no friction modifier

Transfer case = 2qts synthetic ATF

Auto transmission = 18qts synthetic ATF

Power steering = ?qts synthetic ATF

Power brakes = ?qts ?

I think that covers everything I just don’t know the quantity for the PS or brakes

Is there a difference between mercon V and synthetic mercon?

sorry i keep dragging this out i just dont want to have to face the wife if i screw something up, you know those kinds of looks can kill

There is a tag on the rear diff. Using my 99 10.25 sterling as an example the break down is:

The codes on the rear differential tag on my truck are :
S409B
3L73 102 8C11

The break down of these codes:
S409B:
S = Sterling Differential

409 = Print Number (Model Number)

B = Revision Identifier (Change in Design)

3L73:
3L73 = 3.73 Ratio
L = Limited Slip
Absence of L = Open Differential.
A 3.73 geared limited slip axle would be marked as : 3L73.
An open differential would show 3(space)73.

102 denotes the ring gear size. 10.25 inches. 105 is 10.5 inches

8C11 is the build date.
8 = year of manufacture. In this case it means 1998.
C = month of manufacture. A= January, L= December so C= March
11 = day of manufacture. So My differential was manufactured on March 11, 1998

For PS check the link in post #6 for quantity of ATF needed.

here is what is on the tag on the rear diff

S409 H
L73 105 1A29

i think i have it its a sterling 10.5

The break down of these codes:
S409B:
S = Sterling Differential

409 = Print Number (Model Number)

H = Revision Identifier

3L73 = 3.73 Ratio
L = Limited Slip

105 is 10.5 inches

1A29 is the build date.
1 = year of manufacture. In this case it means 2001.
A= January
29 = day of manufacture.

Patrick, Ford changed their stance on the front differential fluid. USE 75W-140 IN THE FRONT. Call your dealer and they will tell you this.

You got it Patrick. Damn easy once the mystery is taken out of it.

Here is the PS Flush write-up that Chris posted. CLICK

All Mercon V is synthetic.
