Ok, here's a probably simple question. Just just bougth an 03 F350 6.0L diesel with an aftermarket SOny (or something like that) DVD player for the kids in back. I cannot listen to AM at all beucase of the engine (glow plug) noise. FM and CD's = no problem. In a gas vehicle, the spark plugs can cause interference due to ground loopps and such, but I have never heard of noise from a diesel, let alone glow plugs, but the noise on the spoeakers goes right with the revving of the engine. I haven't had a chance to look at it, but I'm thinking there is a ground loopp or something that was screwed up when the DVD player was installed.
waynaferd, i hear you. im 6' 8". figurhead, your glow plugs shut off as soon as the engine fires so that is not your problem. all engines create a small amount of electromagnetic interference, whether from the alternator or whatever, im not sure what causes it, and apparently your powerstroke's electromagnetic frequency messes with your AM signal.
thanks for the quick reply 460/5. I wasn't sure about the glow plugs, since i am a diesel newbie, learning from you and others. i am actually an electromagnetic interference (EMI) engineer, but haven't had a chance to check the grounding schemes of the stereo, batteries to chassis, etc. Usually that is the problem, or a simple audio frequency filter on the stereo power leads will do the trick. I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue. thanks again.
If you want a good set up go to an audio forum because most of the suggestions on here are sub par, no offense to anyone so please dont take it that way. I have had tons of different set ups in my cars and done alot of installs and spent my fair share on time on audio forums. you could get a nice speakers/amp combo for about 300. For a HU go with alpine or pioneer. Do your research though and buy online it will be alot cheaper.
