2 cycle Detroits rotation can be reversed quite easily. It is a matter of resetting the timing gears to a different mark. You do have to take off the front and rear timing covers to do it. The oil pump drive must be reversed, also.
They can run backwards by accident. I once saw a dump truck that ran very rough and had 1 speed foreward and 13 speeds backward! The driver had stalled it with the clutch engaged, and it rolled backwards resulting in reverse rotaton. Because the timing was wrong, the power was very low and it smoked badly. No oil pressure, either, but the driver didn't notice that symptom! Glad it wasn't my truck!
smoking crack? i'll find the website that states this and there are a few marine engines on ebay with REVERSE drive for sale you should'nt make insults and statements unless you know what you are doing, go back to watching hot rod tv you shadetree mechanic...............
Like already stated, Two stroke Detroit's are known for running backwards, seen it many many times, and yes they can be intentionally ran either rotation.
Any motor can with the proper changes.
Burl Blair used to run his boat motors backwards until they outlawed it, the rule is named after him.
You can get marine detroits, or nearly any marine engine for that matter in CW or CCW rotation. A two engined boat with both engines spinning the same direction would make the boat pull to a side, so they use opposite spinning engines.
Not sure if your interested, or if it would be to far out of you way, but over here in RI there is a rebuilt 6-71 for sale on Craigslist.
the 6-71 is to tall and heavy for my application, thanks... thats why i am looking for the 53 series detroit. mainly a 3-53 or a 4-53 and maybe even a 6V-53 if i come across one.. i have a 66' f-250 i want to put a 3-53.. and a 86 f-350 dually that i'm looking to convert as well, tired of the 6.9 no power diesel,,, maybe a cat will go in this one

Cat, as in 3208? Why not upgrade to a big 6? DT360 from an IH truck or bus. Even a Ford 6.6 would be a nice option. Those in the know, know Detroits can be made to run either direction. Try Camerota. dieselenginetrader.com , or Arsco.
ya still looking for a detroit and i found a 3116 cat i'm going to but in my 86-f-350 more power than the 3208 v8 cat and only weights 1195lbs compaired to the 2000lbs 3208,... still want that 3-53 detroit for my 66 project
usmc. easy fella. It is a saying, not an insult.
I work offshore on Detroit diesels (I might know what I'm talking about). I'm the Chief engineer for a Weeks Marine tug. So go ahead and find a "website" I'll stick to my realworld knowledge on the thousands of marine engines I've worked with.
Most boats spin outboard or inboard. The wheels never turn in the same direction. 99% of the time the gear boxes are where the prop spin direction comes from. Direct drive on a boat with a high revving detroit would be problematic and you'd have no power at low rpms.
Some of the old boats had direct reversing engines that were straight drive, but they also spun 300rpms wide open.
so your saying a 3-53 marine detroit will work... ya i got fired up pretty quick over nothing, was just having problems with my f-350 and dumped piles of money in it and turned out to be a bad IP pump i just got off of diesel performance, will never buy from there again....
no problem bro.
In the philly/camden area you've got plenty of shipyards.
I know ours in Bayonne probably has 3-4dozen old detroits laying around. Finding a 3-53 will be alot harder than finding a 3-71. We don't do too many 53 series as if you've got the room a 71 makes more sense.
I've still seen a handful of them around that used to be winch engines or for pulling up spuds.
