a shop that i worked at had an old hyster forklift that the flathead six wes replaced with a marine 354 perkins that spun backwards, it had a seperate box for foreward/reverse so it still had 4 foreward gears, but you put it into reverse to go forward. it also like to pop out of forward and into neutral.
i dont recall if they were 4-53 or 4-71, but i have seen quite a few in graders and similar heavy equipment.
my dad has an old 4cyl turbo diesel sitting around, but were not sure what it is or what it came out of, red in color with an aluminum valve cover. look like it came from a tractor, but the bellhousing matches the clark 5 speed we have. bought it at an auction fo like 25 bucks cause it was the right size for a pickup.
I'm a detroit mechanic. True story with the CW CCW rotations. Front cover, oil pump and rear cover and timing gear change. They just swap end for end. Inline 6-71 engines used to have 2 installed on a skid together and ran into a common gearbox. One rotated CW one CCW, commonly referred to a a twin set. Old oil field application. Also a true story about them running backwards. Not very pretty when that happens.
If your going to update that thing why dont you go modern. If you want a newer small cat engine try calling jack fremont at midwest diesel in blaine mn. They have a lot of new and used cat and cummins engines they sell. He might be able to help you. Unless you know how to work on the detroits like the boat guy you could end up spending alot of money and have nothng to show for it. They are fairly simple motors but you still have to put them together right to get them to last.
Hey Devil Dog- quit foolin' around and get on eBay- I saw a nice 16v-92 on there last week, you might be able to ****** it cheap LOL. I want to do the same thing one day too, I love a screamin' Detroit!
