How do you guys feel about the 351 in an 88 F-350? I am looking at maybe buying one (as an upgrade from the 4.9 F-150) and was wondering how the beast runs?
I am pretty sure it is a gas engine, am I wrong? I would prefer gas becuase it is cheaper.
Is the 88 carb or fuel injected?
If you have any other thoughts about, let me know.
It is a good looking truck from the pictures I have seen and would love to go 4x4 in the snow next winter. The purchase all depends on your opinions and of course me being able to sell my other truck.
351 is a very good truck motor and youll deffinately feel quite a power increase over the 4.9. (the 351 has 60 more hp than the 4.9) 1988 will have electronic fuel injection, its also a gas powered motor. 351 is one of the best truck motors in my opinion
the 351 is a good solid motor that delivers decent mpg's, dont expect to burn rubber with it but it has the best of all worlds put into itwhen it comes to a gas truck engine
the 351 is a strong motor the truck im my sig can pull anything with no probs just slowing down, and itll light both the 37s up. i see the 351 f350s all the time. im looking to buy one for my next truck. its also my favorite ford motor.
Thanks, I am sold. I just need to sell the old 4.9 first. I have found four trucks in my area with the 351w and they are all 4x4. The one I like best(92 F-250) even comes with a snow plow on the front of it, I can't wait to upgrade. It would make winter much more fun.
I can spin my 37" tires easily in first and in second with a little bit of clutch dumping. Tee rear end is locked so that's not a one wheel peel. I get 10Mpg's but it's worth every penny.

I agree that the 351 is a good motor. If they are running good they should be able to light the tires up. My '94 F4TE Roller 351 has only a full exhaust from headers to the tail pipe and a K&N. I keep it tuned up and running good, and it will light up the tires all you want. With a 4.10 Trac Lok and a little bit of power breaking you can smoke the tires pretty good. Given I just spent $1200 on a set of tires last year, I have not done it in a while, but I can when I want! When I first put the B&M shiftkit in my C6 it would chirp tires on the 1-2 shift. I have since adjusted my vacuum modulator to keep it from shifting so hard when towing.
If you want more power than the 351 has to offer, get a 460. My dad has one and he gets the same mileage I do, we both have 4.10s, but he has overdrive.
