cleaning injectors / engine flushing

Ok so I have been doing a little research on my truck and the problem I'm having is when I start my truck cold It runs really rough and has no power until it is warmed up.

From what I have read this is most likely caused by the gunk in the oil rail going to the fuel injectors? Am I right here? I read that there is a little magnet that moves back and forth in there and if you aren't religious about your oil changes then it will get gummed up. When my engine is good and warm it runs just fine.

Now if I'm on the right track here I was thinking there are a couple of ways I could try and fix this.
1. I could put in some marvel mystery oil and see if that helps clear it up. I have done this and it helped a little. I think I'm going to add more though.
2. I could use synthetic oil and that would make it easier for the magnet to move back and forth maybe?
3. I could try doing an engine flush. Has anyone tried doing an engine flush with diesel fuel. I know the old folks used to do this stuff back in the day. I herd that you drain about 2 quarts of oil and replace it with diesel fuel, then run your truck at idle for 10-15min. Change the oil and filter and your good.

What do ya'll think I should do. Anyone tried any of these things or have a better solution to this problem? thanks

I would switch to a 5w-40 synthetic, flushes are not recommended with this engine because of the high-pressure-oil-fired injectors. You can also look into a product called Hot Shots Secret, supposed to help with injector stiction (gummed up injectors), but it is somewhat controversial.

Do you have the latest flash from the dealer? I understand that that flash deals with just what you are talking about....

It installs the latest info into the computer of your truck. This has been a good solution to your problem.

Here is "Beachbum's" answer to this question:

1) Replace all fuel filters and oil filters and make sure you use Motorcraft, Int'l or Racor. This makes sure you have no loss of fuel or oil pressure. "Will-fit" filters have known to cause issues with these motors.

2) Try the Hotshot Secret oil additive... I did, and it does not hurt anything... but some are not sure if it is really worth it.

3) You may save your money on the oil additive and just use Rotella-Syn 5W-40 motor oil as it will make for easier starts and runs cleaner than 15W-40 dino oil.

4) Use Powerservice fuel additive (double-dose) in every tank or for the next few to clean the injectors from the fuel side of the injector. The synthetic oil and/or oil additive above will clean it from the oil side of the injector. The additve will also make for a cleaner burn of the fuel. (I use in every tank since new).

5) Check with dealer if your truck has ever been "reflashed/updated" with the latest computer program for proper operation. Some of the issues many face with the 6.0L can and are corrected with new programming of the truck's computer system.

6) When was your air filter last changed? Restricted air will make for rough running.

I only state these things as you stated you are the 3rd owner... so maybe some of this has been neglected.

Welcome to the diesel community... if money is an issue.... you bought the wrong vehicle to own... they are expensive to operate and take care of (filters, oil, repairs and the like).

I addition to the excellent advice above. If you haven't got an OASIS report yet. Do so.

Stay away from the Marvel Mystery oil.
