Trans OD problem, flashing,shifting problem

The wife's 00 X (v10,4x4) is having a problem with the OD light flashing and the tranny shifting crazily when it's flashing. The shop i use pulled the Speed sonsor code and replaced the one on the rear about 8 weeks ago. Well it was good for a while but now it's back. However it's only an occasional problem.

It's giving the same code, and neither they or i want to keep throwing parts at it until it's gone.

I think i read that there are 2 sensors for this. Searching didn't help.

I have 3 small kids riding in this thing on a daily basis, so i need to get this resolved quickly. Any words of wisdom will be great.

No. it cant figure out which gear it wants to be in. I should also add that this usually happens when accelarating from a complete stop

The only way to figure this out is to have the codes read.

Then it wasn't the speed sensor. It's probably a damaged wire going to the speed sensor.

Since the new speed sensor fixed the problem for a while, I would look at the connector from the harness to the speed sensor. Pull it off and inspect it very carefully. If you see any corrosion, try to get a replacement pigtail. Otherwise, clean it well, make sure the female terminals slide tightly onto the male pins, and reassemble using dielectric grease.

Cheap fix, if it works, and easy to do. If it doesn't work, at least you have done some preventive maintenance while eliminating a possible trouble spot.

I have just been through the mill on my transmission.

The solenoid pack is controlled by a signal from the PCM. This is basically what makes it shift.

The speed sensor sends a signal to the PCM to provide the input on when to shift.

The Temp sensor sends a compensation signal to the PCM to adjust shifting pressure to compensate for cold temps.

The (neutral safety switch) TRS is the driver control to shift the transmission.
There is a codes 705, 708, 1705 that will show this.

If you are having difficulty shifting but it does shift.

The speed sensor is suspect and of course as others point out must be clean with good connectors.

If your speed sensor is working, (check the speedometer while driving is it accurate as the speed sensor sends the same signal to the speedo)

If your TRS codes aren't showing. There is a codes 705, 708, 1705 that will show this.

If you have confirmed the wiring had no chaffing and done a point to point wire check;

You have 2 items. The PCM and the solenoid pack in the transmission.

There electrical and mechanical reasons for the pack not to shift. Replacement is the only option for this. However this can be done without pulling the transmission.

There are codes for the coil packs but I don't have them.

My truck is still down with a new transmission waiting for the pcm to arrive. I determined with the tranny guys my problem is a failed PCM.

If you replace the PCM and you have "chip" keys you will need a lock smith to reset the keys for the engine to start.

Hope this was helpful.

I think you guys might be right on the faulty wiring. I will check it first since that is obviously the cheapest thing to fix.

Vettdvr, Thanks for laying it out, i apprieciate the effort, and have made a copy of your post for reference.

I am still under the impression that there are 2 sensors according to what i have read here. The other near the T-case
