what is the easiest way to change COPS 5.4 99 Econo. or any forums i might be referred to???? f150 look easier, on VAN everything looks cramped up in there??? any help thanks!!!!!
On a van everything is cramped in there. I've got the 6.8 which is even tighter. I've averaged a COP one every other year for the past 10 years and they cost about $350 per to replace at the dealer. I finally said enough is enough and bought a full set (10) for only $150 off of e-bay. Held on to them for few months and then finally one failed. I went at it with full gusto only to find out that I could only access one of them with my tools and limited knowledge and capabilities. Mercy was upon me as the one I pulled (front driver side) just happened to be the bad one. No clue how to get the others out when they start going. A OBDII scanner will be purchased then as it's essential to know which one is bad and just concentrate on the missed cylinder.
I found letting the air out of the front tires to lower the front and an extension that locks the plug socket onto it is a great help. Use anti seize and a torque wrench to install and coat inside COP boots liberally with dielectric grease. I did mine (1997 e250 5.4) removed fuel rails and exchanged injectors, motorcraft plugs, and all COPs at same time. The twist lock extension was a valuable tool to have that locks the sparkplug socket on. The padded socket helps prevent breakage to the insulator.
It's tough, but with the right common tools, it can be done. I changed on 8 plugs on my 2000 5.4. Last time I changed a COP I couldn't believe I had done it, but I did. I think #1 was the worst. I removed everything that was easy, and loosened up a lot of bolts so that I could 'force' things out of the way.
