Front bearing

Guys, looking for some advice. I have an 03' F150 4x4. The front bearing went on it. As is my luck, that required a full hub assembly replacement. Just wondering if the bearing in the assembly comes pre-packed or does it need greased? If it does need to be packed, how? I can't see how a guy can get to it to do so.

Thanks.

the bearing assembly is non-servicable, therefore, doesnt need to be packed

Great, thanks. Pretty smooth replacement. Saw a little smoke from that wheel after the test drive but there could be a little grease on the rotor. That and I'm hearing the dreaded howl. Guess the other side needs replaced.

So, I could really use some further input here guys. Before the assembly replacement, there was an intermittent rub with each rotation of the wheel. Pulled the hub and the bearing was definitely shot. Now after replacing the hub I have a constant howl that increases in intensity as the truck slows down. Sounds to me like it's coming from the same corner. This is a pretty straight forward process. Can you think of anything that might have been missed to cause this? Everything I know about howling (which isn't much I'll admit!) points to bearing.

this is what the part looks like. it is permanently greased. you must keep the axle nut tight when wheel is on the ground. you can not loosen the nut or bearing will be damaged if truck is moved with nut loose. bearing is normally a constant noise, not intermittent. also noise increases with ground speed.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I think at this point, as unlikely as it may sound, the replacement hub I bought is faulty. I'll see if they're willing to swap it.

Side note, is it possible to over-tighten the center axle nut causing the bearing to bind?

no. the nut must be about 200 ft pounds to keep the bearing halfs tight together. if its loose, the clearance will tear up the bearing. overtight i doubt would do anything but damage the nut threads.
