Mmmmmm, what nut? The 4 nuts that hold the hub to the knuckle are 13/16 ths. There is a snap ring that goes over the spindle, then 3 washers, but they just slide off after the snap ring is off.
Maybe I mistook that thin hexagon thing as a nut. The one between the washers behind the snap ring. I guess I can't post pictures here like in my snowmobile forum or I would. Do you have to pay to post? That's screwed up.
No need for a pic, I gotcha. That is not a nut. I thought so too at first. Get the snap ring off and it will slide ride off. There are 3 washers, that is one of them, they will slide right out.

Thanks, I thought it was strange because of no threads there and awful thin for a nut.
I'm facing the same repair. I need to replace the ball joints on my 2000 4X4 Diesel Excursion. I thought with 100,000 miles I might as well replace the hubs too.
I have been quoted all kinds of prices on the hubs. From Ebay $175 a pair to $450+ each. What hubs are you using? What are you paying for them and where are you buying them. I would love to be able to buy the Ebay Hubs that are OEM, if they are quality.

Why replace the hubs? they last a lot longer than the ball joints and they are the only ones that allow using from inside. Just clean em and grease em. Do you mean wheel hubs? I wouldn't replace them unless they are bad. Just pack them with grease.
Thanks for your help.
Yes the wheel hub/bearing assembly.
It was my understanding that the bearings in the wheel hubs can't be serviced.
What kind of a life span do the wheel hubs on the diesel have?
Thanks for your help.

Should be the same as for gas. I have 140k miles on mine and they are tight. You can grease them, just push some good quality axle grease into the needle bearings in the wheel hub.

Here use this site for your servicing. Easy to do and other things on this site that you could use for servicing the same rig. The needle bearings are non servicable as per FORD, but you can still repack them. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page
