Got a little hissing sound when I turn my steering wheel at low speeds and I get the same sound when depressing my brake pedal. I only get the brake pedal sound when truck is not moving. I get the hiss when I depress pedal to shift out of park.
Truck is a 99 early
Thanks for any help you guys may have.
Sounds to me like you hear the pump doing its thing. The power steering pump supplies power to the brake system. Make sure you put ATF in the power steering pump, NOT power steering fluid. If you did add power steering fluid, you need to do a complete flush. A good flush will always help.
Just started to make this sound. Noticed that if I push brakes down hard in idle that the tac junps a few hundred rpms. Pump has ATF in it. Sounds like a vacuum leak almost. Brakes make the same sound not as loud, or as often
Can you have someone turn the wheel while you listen in front for where the sound is coming from? If it is the power steering pump, I would flush it first, before changing it out. It don't hold much fluid, so you wouldn't be out much if it is bad. No leaks?
No leaks. I will have thye misses turn the wheel later when she gets home. The sound comes from straight in front of driver. Had a buddy riding in it yesterday and he gave me wtf is that when i turned the wheel. Hope I dont have to replace the pump. Would have been a lot easier to do when I did the water pump last week. Started making this sound 3 day later

(insert extremely profane language here)
I've been putting power steering fluid in my resevoir for the longest time and now it's not only starting to hiss, but it's making some serious noise!!!!

Looks like a flush is in order.....
Don't feel bad, this happens quite a bit. Who in the world would put something besides Power steering fluid in the power steering pump. Yeah, its crazy.
OK guys...Fill me in...What is with the ATF fluid instead of the PS fluid? This is the first time I have heard of this.

Just the way the system is designed. It's made to use tranny fluid in the steering / hydroboost system. Most of us switch over to a synthetic ATF when we do the flush. I didn't notice a lot of difference in steering when I did mine, but I did notice the brake pedal became more responsive at slow speeds. Almost felt too touchy for the first day until I got used to it.
Would this take care of my steering issues at low speeds? If I am trying to back a trailer into a tight spot with my foot on the break, I can bearly turn the wheel?
Sorry about the hijack Chad! Sounded too interesting not to ask.

The flush should help this, but I can't say if it will cure it completely. It's one of the side effects of the way our steering system is designed, and it's made worse if you have wider than stock tires.
I don't ever back a trailer with my foot on the brake while turning (I just push in or feather the clutch), so I've never experienced this issue, just read about it. If you've never flushed it, then I'd say it's well worth your time to do so.
