I've been putting power steering fluid in my resevoir for the longest time and now it's not only starting to hiss, but it's making some serious noise!!!!
Looks like a flush is in order.....
Use SYN ATF fluid. People seem to have better results with it.
Well boys a trip to Autozone and $160 later, my truck is back to normal.
Went over to my Dad's yesterday and he helped me with the project. The fluid was a dark brown and nasty, couldn't believe thats what was in my power steering pump.
It didn't grind or make any of the unusual noises it makes on a cool morning. The brakes and steering are definately more responsive so it seems that the Mobil 1 Syn ATF did it's job and then some. But at $7.99 a quart, I learned an expensive lesson....
BTW, it didn't cost me $160 to do the job, I'd also never pay anyone to do it considering how easy it was. My shopping list consisted of:
-16 quarts of Valvoline Blue 15W-40 (Great stuff!)
-2 bottles of Prolong friction reducer
-1 Long funnel like the one used in the write up
-3 quarts of Mobil 1 Syn ATF
-3/8th tubing
-1 R134a refrigerant refill (ended up using it on my Dad's Acura since mine was full)

Good deal. Glad you were watching and learned something new, AND fixed it.
Thanks for posting. I just learned something new as well. I didn't know that the PS system used ATF and learned from a video from powerstrokehelp.com that ever the 6spd trannies use mercon 5 ATF. Crazy rigs!!! But got to love'm, they fun to drive
Seriously not trying to sound like a smart-azz here... Y'all might have a look in your manuals every now & then. I NEVER put anything in my vehicles unless I see it in black & white, or know from a reputable source to use something else (like using ELC instead of stock coolant, for example).
This is on page 220 of my 2002 manual:
CHECKING AND ADDING POWER STEERING FLUID
Check the power steering fluid.
Refer to the scheduled maintenance guide for the service interval schedules. If adding fluid is necessary, use only MERCON ATF.
When I flushed mine with syn, the steering felt "smoother", and the brakes did seem a bit better. BTW, my next fluid change is syn brake fluid...
Well unfortunately mine didn't come with a manual. This forum has been my manual
But I didn't take it as a smart remark. I know you're just trying to suggest RTFM
Don't feel bad, this happens quite a bit. Who in the world would put something besides Power steering fluid in the power steering pump. Yeah, its crazy.
Especially when it says "power steering fluid" on the cap.
Done deal. Noise gone. All good. Btw to the fella a few post back, I never put in power steering fluid, previous owner????? Just had 208,000 on it, stuff very dark and not a very nice color. Is now.
Thanks for all the good input everyone. Have a great weekend.
