I just added a set of 38" tires to the Excursion and need to have the speedometer calibrated. I know that the speed sensor effects more than just the odometer, it also affects shift points and abs.
I hope your knowledge can help me. I have read, the Fords cannot use a signal changer to modify the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) output. It messes up the algorithms of the ABS computer. I don't understand it so I pose the question to you. I also believe the dealer and most OBD II plug in programmers can only adjust up to 34-35".
I have a signal modifier from Digital Dakota on my Jeep and wonder if that is an option. I am also questioning Superlifts Truspeed speed sensor recalibrator and Superchips tirepaq programmer. If there are any other options out there please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Well not sure about others but I can change the tire size with my software to anything I want.. Its based on Revolutions per Mile that is available on the spec sheet for most tires.. However Bill at PHP told me this does not correct what the speedometer shows, only corrects speed data for shifting etc... which is actually the important one... You can call PHP and ask him for more detail...
here is a pic of the setting with Minotaur
Sorry for leaving it out. It is a 2000, 7.3L, 4x4, auto. Stock engine without programers or anything. Only thing changed is a leveling kit, cut fenders and the tires.

I don't know if it is my computer, but I can't see a picture.

Reason: formating
I don't think you can do it without a Chip... Begs the question why have a 7.3 without a chip. If you are stock and dont want to do a lot of mods go with lower power tunes say 80HP or less... you can get stock, no start, high idle, Fuel sipper and Bill has various tunes 25, 40, 65, 75 etc... you will see benefits even without any other mods.. I think he can even burn a single position chip and correct your speed settings as well as make some shift mods for he larger tires

Thanks for the effort to add the link. However it still doesn't work on this end. It may be my browser or the fact I am not a member of PHP.
The Excursion is stock, for now. If I had my way I would throw $20K at it and have a permanent smile on my face. Hopefully there will be a natural progression. I have a lot of plans I would like to do. Step by step, which requires, money, time and patience from my lovely bride.
afreemanmd- Thanks for the link to the Truspeed install. It looks like the same functional design used by the Digital Dakota unit I have on my Jeep, and similar to the Wizard. Maybe that is the best route.
Does anyone have experience with the Wizard or Truespeed? I googled them and like the ease of set up with the Wizard. Are there any drawbacks which anyone knows of? ABS, shifting, odometer problems?
Thanks for the input so far. I want to change the shift points and the Minotaur would provide that but I also would like the speedometer to read right. I want to avoid a speeding ticket and don't want to constantly rely on my own brain to calculate the change. Plus my wife drives it and with a 27% change, at 65 mph on the speedometer I am traveling 82 mph. That comes out to a $300 ticket, point on her record and increased insurance.
I am leaning towards the Wizard, Truspeed or Digital Dakota unit. They all appear to be based on the same design and application, just small differences in the set up after being wired in.
Does anyone have first hand experience with any of these?
Just an update, I did correct my speedometer using AutoEngenuity software to 34.5 inches and it ended up being about 11% off. I set it to stock size tires with AE and the speedometer was an exact match to my GPS so changing the tires size in Minotaur DID correct the speedometer and I dont think there is any limit to the range you can go with Minotaur. Bill was surprised it worked but said he had issues setting that in the past... so it will most likely work for the larger tires. leave the AE adjustment at stock setting
