I've swapped a ZF5 into a 2000 Navigator, and am trying to figure out a solution to my lack of a speedometer. The ZF5 doesn't have any provision for the VSS, whereas the old 4R100 had it on the side of the tailshaft, before the transfer case. I've read that the manual transmission F250s that had the ZF5 read the speed from a sensor mounted in the top of the rear differential. I have a sensor in that spot, and the wiring diagrams show it being for ABS.
My question is, would splicing the signal from that differential sensor to the stock vss harness work? I would imagine the pulse wheels are different size between the tailshaft sensor and the diff, but was thinking of using an inline speedo calibrator to help with that. Any ideas?
No you cannot tap into the ABS sensor, it has a completely different pulse signal timing.
The ZF series use a mechanical speedometer cable instead of an electrical VSS, it's not that there isn't a speedo output there at all, correct? If that's the case just search for a mechanical speedometer gear to VSS adapter that fits the ZF and you'll be good to go. Of course you'll also want to make sure the correct 6, 7, or 8 tooth speedo gear is installed inside the tranny so the speedo is accurate.
