Gentleman,
I have a 1975 ford f-150 supercab custom, with a 460. Shes a groundpounder, but I am a carpenter, and thats all I need. I want to restore her, a little on the custom side, and get about 300 to 350 horsepower out of her. She actually runs pretty good right now, shes baby crap green, but in remarkable condition. Ford gives it a 185 horse rating stock...I want to bring that up a bit. I figure to rebuild her, cause the rings are shot, and the valve stems are letting oil into the combustion chamber and fouling the plugs. I have about 4 grand to put into the motor, so besides a basic rebuild kit, what are your suggestions to bring her to that performance range. I am set on doing the rebuild myself (I have rebuilt motors and have two friends that are mechanics, but they are not performance minded) All opinions are appreciated...also I would like to diamondplate the floors, know anyone who does that? One more thing, I need to raise the front, no one makes a lift kit for it, and besides drilling out hockey pucks and using longer bolts, I'm sure someone out there can make some custom knuckles that will lift the front about 3-4 inches, I have airlift in the back. Thanks all!!
Welcome to fte. With 4000 you can build a pretty stout 460 as long as you get the parts combination right. If you are building a performance motor it is always good to balance the bottom end. As far as a good way to spend more, I would buy a set of edelbrock alum. heads and a matching dual plane intake. If you call comp cams they will ask you a few questions about your truck and match a cam for it. You can buy a cam kit including springs, seals, locks, lifters. Get a new double roller timing chain. Put a new oil pump in. I'd go with a holley 750 for a carb. That should about take care of 4000. You will have close to 400 hp in my guess if you do this combo. A set of headers would help her breathe too. Just some ideas. Good luck and have fun with it.
4K could easily get you 500hp. get some 9 or 9.5-1 CR pistons. Try and locate some DOVE-1 heads. Buy yourself a nice dual plane intake. Get a good RV grind cam. and throw a holley 750 on there. Headers would be a must. After that you can start looking a a good ignition. I like the MSD's myself with a good 6A or 6AL box. If you feel like spending some dough on heads, you can get some summit ones for a really good price or some edeljunks for a bit more. With aluminum heads you can typically run 1 point of compression higher than with cast heads before detonation.
def get a set of DOVE heads, I have a 70 460 in my 76 f150, with 10-1 comp, cam, eldlebrock intake, 750 holley carb, mallory ignition, and L&L headers with some straight pipes, and that motor will burn off the 35's all day long on my truck
also with the dove heads you can run an adjustable valvetrain, which is real nice
stock with this motor was 365 hp
I have a set of heads in the basement if interested
