Thank you Rockledge. I have done cars before so I have all the tools but just never tackled the truck. Thanks for telling me how to do the job rather than how difficult it was going to be, and how many tools I was going to need, etc, etc, etc. Now I just have to "get-er-done".
Did the lower ball joints on my 2002 2-wheel drive Ranger today. The hardest part was separating the upper ball joint from the upper control arm pinch bolt. Thank goodness for PB-Blaster. Had to use two pickle forks, one was the big ol hammer type and the other was in an air hammer. Placed one on top of the other to span the large gap to get them apart. Destroyed the rubber boot in the process but fortunately Auto Zone sells just the boots so I did not have to repace the uppers, just the boots. I think that I could replace the uppers with my 20-ton press but you would still have to take out the control arm due to lack of clearance to use the C-clamp style press. Thanks for the help, as usual the hardest part of any project is just getting started.
I was going to change my upper ball joints on my '98 2wd and found out that the amount of time I saved and the small added cost it was worth changing both upper control arms instead.
