True, but Ford, like most companies, likes to operate within a comfort zone. They're comfortable with the modular engine and know its proclivities. They're also comfortable with the output and the amount of $$$ they get from 3rd party vendors that make add-ons for an engine that's been around since '97 (the 4.6 has been around sin '92).
The DOHC has a TON of parts in the drivetrain. The SOHC is mechanically simpler and cheaper to produce.
Just look at the '05+ Mustangs-They have a SOHC 4.6L that makes 300HP and 300 Ft Lbs. My 99 Cobra had the DOHC 4.6L and made (supposedly) 320HP and 300 Ft Lbs of torque. That engine had HUGE heads and lots of moving parts.
Look what GM has done with the old push rod motors. Very little dynamics and a ton of horse power. You cannot argue with the vette and GTO motors, they have some real ***** and few parts.
Push rod motor can't happen soon enough for me. Easier and cheaper to work on and can be just as responsive as a modular engine. Push rod engine should be a lot cheaper for Ford to produce.
the gt500 motor is a $15,000 option. The cobra 4v is a $12,000 option
you can buy a brand new 5.4 for about $5,000...there is alot of money involved in a 4v motor. Especially when you start bumping the displacement.
Money is what makes the world go round. A 4v 5.4 would sell in the f-150, but not enough to recoup the r&d and other supply factors.
Everything boils down to a #'s game, and ford has done the figures.
this is some what true. Gt500 has a super charger some of the extra cost. The dohc uses the same bottum end(or very close) so the main difference incost is production #s. The dohc is used in low production cars that is why they cost more. If they produced equal numbers the dohc would be slightly more money. Having said that the 3v head is a good design and is a compromise between the to. There are mustang with turbos a blowers making huger horse power without internal work. These trucks make good power but it is all way down low. I think if someone put in a diffent sent of cams they would be really surpised.
